as you could probably have guessed by the title, I'm a new player getting ready to leave the newbie island. (I've almost reached my goals of 35 in fight and in magic)
Anyway, from what I've heard, there is a lot to do on the mainland... but I don't know what... I've heard you can get an apartment... how do those work? And mounts/pack animals? Guilds? Sorry for being so general, but I really dont know what to expect on the mainland...
what to expect on the mainland....

Re: what to expect on the mainland....
-Apartments cost a million dapers, so it'll take awhile to get all that as a new player. I don't think you can do anything with the apartments yet except walk inside and visit. You might be able to store items, but I'm not sure since I haven't baught one.
-On your Configuration window (i think it's U key by default). One of the interface tabs allows you to view guild names and/or guild symbols over peoples heads to quickly recognize. Then you can just ask them about their guild.
-There are pack animals in game currently. Go to any stable and buy one for 100 thousand dapers. Open you Animal window so you can control putting it in and out of the stables. You can also make it follow you around or stay put, but that's not recommended in a hostile area. If the pack animal dies you lose it and all it was carrying. So most people keep it in the stables. You can then just visit a stable, open your inventory and have access to a second tab for extra space.
-The ability to mount animals is not in place yet, but it is planned in future patch releases hinted by the devs in short story.

Re: what to expect on the mainland....
On the mainland:
- U will die many times learning what mobs are aggro and which are not.
- U will interact with many people and meet other races (zorai, tryker, matis, fyros).
- U will learn the most amazing harvesting spots where to get the best possible mats if u harvest.
- U will refine your sneaking skills to a degree that would make master thief garret jealous.
- U will learn that the goddess of this world is jena.
- U will thank jena for the radar(compass)
- U will thank jena for the speed/invulnerability/protection auras on a daily basis.
- U will learn to appreciate the presence of water.
- U will participate in fun events that will probably cost u massive DP.
- U will join a guild sooner or later.
- U will spam regional chat with " WHO WANTS TO HUNT ??" if u remain guildless.
- U will learn to throw millions of dappers at crafting.
- and finally, u will 1.enjoy it 2. despise it. 3. play EQ 2or wow
did i forget something ?
and that is what the mailand is/does

Re: what to expect on the mainland....
Pretty close except for the WOW and EQ2 parts. I will eat a tonne of glass shards before I play ANYTHING from sony Verant again. And WOW's graphics were a tad TOO cartoony for me, FLAT MAtte ink and paint, kinda like an OLD cartoon. Sad really, I wanted to find another beta to enjoy for a while, but nothing until WIsh comes out after Jan 1st...oh well.

The interesting thing about warcraft's cartoonish looks is that it can convey extreme brutality. I mean, look at the orcs, cartoons, but damn scary ones
Well im betaing wow a bit now, but im sticking with Ryzom untill patch 2 at least.

Re: what to expect on the mainland....

Re: what to expect on the mainland....
Of course, it is not necessary to dump dapper into materials for crafting unless crafting is going to be your main focus. I am doing just fine making my own armor and jewelry from the materials I harvest.
Sure, a real crafter would have higher skill and produce better items, but I get by.
