1) For the most part the people who I saw leaving after patch1 either left *immediately* after and didn't see the fixes (which were amazingly fast coming) or had as their sole complaint something along the lines of "wah wah wah I can't kill monster X which is 100levels above me without getting hurt anymore"

That is absolutely not true. I never even SAW a monster even 20 levels higher than me, and I complained, and others complained, that it was IMPOSSIBLE to kill a monster YOUR OWN LEVEL.

Don't deliberately distort the truth, you know damn well what you said is NOT what people were complaining about.

It is for me. Only way you can know if it's fun for you, is to try it. Happily, you can do this for 14 days at no cost. I'd say, go for it. Chances are good you'll know within a few minutes if you love it or hate it.

If you do start, here's some info.

Matis newbie land seems to be attracting the most players, if you are looking for a relatively high population from the start. However, the Tryker and Fyros lands have excellent, if smaller, newbie communities. I haven't been on the Zorai newbie land for a while, but I imagine there are at least a few people starting up as zorai. Use the Region chat to find them. There are also people like me who are logging on to their newbie characters from time to time just to answer questions and help new players get familiar with the basics of the game.

If you want a good overview of the skills available in the game, pick one each of these action packs when you build your character: Magic, Harvesting, and Crafting. Fighting skill requires no action pack to start up for free (at no cost of skill points).

Meeting people is easy, because you can talk to anyone in your region of the game using Region chat. This is one gaming community where coming out and saying that you are new will attract almost immediate attention of other players who are willing to help you, and even enjoy it.

I'd tell you more, but sadly I have to leave for work now... good luck if you do decide to join us, hope you'll enjoy the game as much as I do.

And you should go read the EQ2 boards. Apparntly the grass isn't greener, just has better resolution and talks.

So the majority of EQ2 customers are going to jump ship in less than a month over a bad patch then? ;)
