I've been checking this game out just after the Open Beta closed (really bad timing on my part) so I'm really interested in the game. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any in-depth reviews, nor have I been able to find anything on these forums about the general quality of the game in more specific aspects (if these posts do exist, please point in the right direction )
It's either this game, or Call of Duty: United Offensive
I know that United Offensive is totally kickass, but I'd really rather play a game like this that could possibly entertain me for more than a month or two.
So, uh... anyone have any comparisons? I read somewhere the character creation is much like that of Asheron's Call 1. That's the first MMO I played, and played for 3 years. That was the best part about that game, in my opinion.
I just need to know more about the game before I invest 50 bucks. I'm super poor
Anyone's thoughts are welcome and appreciated.
Someone enlighten me please

1) How are you posting in this thread if you don't have a paid account?
2) Do you have specific questions, you are bound to get better answers that way.
Re: Someone enlighten me please
i guess what you need to address is what is important to you as a player so that i can narrow down what to talk about aka battle system,"leveling",ect. Right off the bat i can tell you nothing out there has anything near the ambiant graphics and gameplay that ryzom has to offer.

Re: Someone enlighten me please
i hear CoD:UA isnt on par with the original, and that is more akin to the sniper town in MOHAA, which was a tad frustrating. Go with SoR man.
Here is my my initial thoughts, taken from my SWG guild's forum.
needless to say, in the +1 year that i played SWG, i picked up some serious issues with SOE's dev team. The framework for SWG i believe is unsurpassed, truly a shame that the devs are squandering the enormous potential.

Okay, ive got like 3 hours of it under my belt, and im really optimistic. I know i havent even scratched the surface of the game (we're still on the small noob island for our civ, and i havent even leveled enough to really specialize my prof), but im seeing things here and there that im excited about. One of the biggest things that i'm liking is the ability to customize abilities. Every special has its "recipe" or "forumula" in its details, and as you progress, you earn the ability to edit them, as well as make entirely new ones with your abilities learned. That means that for months to come, you might be able to create moves that are totally unique to you, which might be powerful against so and so creature, perhaps even gaining you notoriety. I noticed that there are guild missions too, which sounds awesome, and i bet will affect the Guild Fame rating I'm seeing. I'm also noticing the GM's (SoR equivalent of devs i guess) promoting roleplaying events. Ive noticed some announcment in our regional chat and post on the boards saying something to the effect "if you are interested in some fun and role play, be at x city at x time, x hero will be there".
The biggest plus I'm giving it for tho, is the player base. First off, everyone is really nice, and i get the feeling that everyone thats playing is there because they are really for the game (given its almost zero promotion during its development) and its concept. I've yet to see one person say they "pwned so and so creature" or proclaim their l33tn355. Also, nick touched on this already, but its so great to be a noob again, in a world of noobs. I found it extremely cool that we Zorai were discussion how we were gonna roleplay our attitudes towards the other civilizations when the time came to meet them. Due to my time as a bothan (Bothans are the superior species), im a huge advocate of same race/species community, and the fact that we are quarantined initially to our own side of the world is really helping our civ get a sense of community.
cons? i hear there are no dungeons, but then again, i also think, if not done right, why bother? *cough**SWG**cough* And, i also hear theya re putting off music for a future patch, so that may be seen as a plus or a con.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on my first few hours of the game, i'll post more as i grow in the game. I'm excited about gettin into the mainland, but i wanna get good and ready before i head out.
OHHYEAH! I just remembered, NO MIND DAMAGE! NO REQUISITE BUFFS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING! NO CLONE ARMOR! NO MAGIC PROF THAT EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM IS AFTER!
i hate jedi.
so nice to take damage only to one bar while fighting....

Re: Someone enlighten me please
I have no idea how I'm doing that. I just registered an account and I could post.
Specific questions... Well the graphics issue has been covered. I'm hearing the loot is just basic materials you can either sell or use to make weapons/armor etc.
I guess the only other question I have would be about combat. I don't really have a preference, but how would it compare to other games?
And is the character creation being like AC1 true or not so accurate?
And music isn't important to me. I turn music off all the time and have Winamp play really epic music to go along with the atmosphere of the game. Stuff like Lord of the Rings soundtrack, and some European Epic Metal bands that make you just want to grab a broadsword, put on a cape and ride out for an adventure

Re: Someone enlighten me please
Well, overall the game has a lot of potential. I'm very disappointed that for a game "with a storyline that matters" none of the story is in the game yet. There's an overall lack of polish with NPC names missing and whatnot, but that's real minor.
On the plus side, the game is ALIVE and just beautiful to explore. The customized actions also make combat fun and interesting.
I don't think we can give you a decent review of the game yet because so much of it is missing. If it were me, I'd sit out a patch or two until there's more stuff to do.

Two areas that I can't help ya with lol. Don't know anything about ac1 and not much about combat in other games.
I can try and describe the char creation area. You have areas in which you can change features. Head, Body, Race, Sex, and Starting Skill Sets. Umm there really isn't much more to tell
Re: Someone enlighten me please
As an AC1 player for a couple of years I'll try to help you out some.
Character creation is better than AC1 was for a couple of years when you couldn't change any of your skills after creation. There is NO hardcap on the number of skills you can get. If you want to learn mace, sword, club, unarmed. You can. Time is your only real cap. There is more avatar customization than AC1 had, but its a much older game.
You do pick what they call packs. This part is similar to AC1 where you picked skills. You pick up to 3 packs and they give your character a bit of direction at launch. No matter what you pick at creation, you won't be gimped for life like you were in AC1 if you didn't make the perfect avatar at creation.
The game reminds me of AC1 in many ways at launch. It's a much different game to play of course, but there are similarities to it and other games. It's lite on content right now, as all these games seem to be. No quests as of yet, just tasks for now. However, there is a lot of interactional things that are alive and well and could keep players busy for awhile.

Re: Someone enlighten me please
I have found some REALLY nasty reviews of this game...most of them written by kids that were moaning the games price and the cost of the monthly fee, or Leet D00Ds moaning about how their power gaming skills wouldn't work with this game or as they put it "D00D this game is Ubber LAME, don't bother".
So if you are looking for a Leet gaming experience...umm don't bother, EQ2 will likely please you better, that or WOW. If you aren't into that part of the MMORPG gaming world but want a LIVING world, where MANY of the things you see are NOT killable, well then pull up a chair and welcome.
Things I noticed the first hour I played the beta. The plants are just SO unearthly. You can't REALLY put this game into this "genre" or that, is it fantasy? not really, no dwarves or elves to be found. Is it futuristic? well kinda, but not really, there is NO metal on this planet, guns are made out of plant or animal materials.
The skill system allows for ALMOST infinite numbers of combos. The class system allows you to be any or all of the classes, specialize or generalize, whatever fits your style. And you can look like you want to as well.
I noticed that SOME of the armor looked similar, but this game is NOT the Attack of the killer newbie clones like Kunark release of EQ was.
I have played a HUGE number of MMORPG's and one or two of the eariler NON 3d games (the Realm for one, cute and fun, but the graphics were awfully Pacmanish). And the things that stand out in this game from the others are:
the lag I get is MOSTLY my isp stinking again, and not often server wide
the Player base is mostly friendly and mature, even the few kids I met were level headed and knew ALOT of manners(and used them often)
I didn't hear ONE case of "hey D00d, Push off, these are My *insert mob name here*" or "Stop ksing me you NOOB", and the crowds of "can someone spare a suit of armor and a sword for a down on his luck newbie" haven't found their way into game(and I hope they NEVER do). I Did hear ALOT of questions and answers and alot of helping going on. And when I helped people I ended up with a full suit of q10 light armor (better than starter stuff) and a dagger(q20 with a spell enchanted into it, WAY better than newbie). All just for helping a few people find a mission harvest node spawn spot, and being nice.
I also HAVE to comment on the GM staff, In EQ it was COMMON to wait MORE than three hours to get a reply from a GM, and if it took any research, it could take weeks to get something fixed. During SOR beta there were a FEW nasty mouthed jerks that tried to ruin the testing time for others. ONE tell to a gm, a reply came within SECONDS, and I don't exagerate on this. And the jerk was silenced and not able to train others or otherwise make a horse's rear end of himself any longer within less than a minute. I don't know or care if he was banned, jailed in game or whatever, trouble was solved with NO begging or pleading and no coddling. But then we WERE in beta, and testing is a privillege not a paid for right.
Now I am not sure if this GM response time will remain the same, but I can tell that the devs and GM staff CARE about the fun of the players. This game is SO not EQ/sony/verant. I would even go as far to say it is almost the direct opposite.
For instance, a few bugs that I reported the last day of open beta were FIXED in the first patch I downloaded. I honestly DOUBT Sony would have done that unless it was an exploitable bug. I talked with a friend that was in beta and she noted a few other bugs that were patched as well. PLUS there were MANY new features and troubles that weren't exactly bugs, more like stuff that got forgotten, like the world spawned resource nodes around ALL newb towns (Tykers only had ONE town that spawned these, and unless you started there, you had to ask a higher level harvester to prospect for you for two levels).
Of ALL the games I have betaed and gone live with...I actually think this is the one I will be playing a few years from now. I hope I helped. And this is my experience and my opinion, others will vary, possibly greatly from mine.
