If you want to know how hard MMORPGs actually get

Come in, pull up a chair, let's discuss all things Ryzom-related.

That sums up the entire jist of why SoR in its current state, isn't for you. Maybe after patch 2(or 3/4/5/etc) you will find it more to your liking. *shrug*

In my opinion, eq, at release, had the same level of general content. You killed named mobs(which there weren't many, smililair to the quantity here per region), to get gear (only SoR you have to get the mats to make the gear), to go fight bigger and better mobs to repeat the whole process.

Only difference is, in SoR, you can also forage good mats to make gear, reducing the impact of needing to kill said named mobs. A max dam/21 h/m pike is a significant disadvantage compared to a max dam/27 (or 31) h/m. Speeds up the killing, making combat faster, and less dangerous.

And if gear doesn't matter, than why are people trying to get gear that is max damage/cast speed/resists? /sarcasm on -We could all run around nekkid using h2h right? /sarcasm off

Stratics and planning in original eq involved more of X amount of players dealing with smaller amounts of creatures at a time. Ryzom is being geared towards larger scale battles. You want a challenge? Go take a group or two and try clearing clopper hill in Oflovak's Oasis(fyros lands).

Spells.... Hrmm a bigger nuked by any other name, was still just a bigger nuke. Same for heals/dots/roots/mez(sleep)/fear. Whether its frost bolt or ice comet. It's still cold 1 or cold 21.

Some people like scripted/static content.
Some people like open pvp.
Some people like class systems.
Some people like dynamic content.
Some people like having many different things they can do.
Some people like no pvp.

Games can only satisfy some of these people well. No game has ever managed to please everyone and be an MMO.

Doubtful. How long do your fights take? Over a minute? No, more like 10 seconds roughly. The difference per fight is 1 swing between 21 and 27 speed.

Because that is why almost everyone is playing these games. To get better gear and to improve their character. 80% of all MMORPG players play for that reason alone, not because they want to sit in a virtual circle and tell stories to each other.

True. But if a game looses 50%+ of its initial subscribers in the first month, something is wrong with it. But yes you are right, it certainly isn't the game for me, not the way the company that produces it is managing it. Maybe it will in a year, maybe it won't. I am just tired of waiting , tired of the fan-club responses the board usually gets regarding people mentioning critical issues, tired of financing a dev team that obviously has no real clue what they are doing, as Gralen elaborated in his post ..tired. Oh, and gone as well - take it easy.

Actually they were lasting around 1 min+ getting 2600xp/kill with Aelvana, Zen, Pheid, and I. So yes, it can make a difference. And when I get jumped by multiple low level critters, it is a huge help over a 21 h/m pike (yes, I have tested it).

Sorry to see you go sir, and hope you the best of luck in finding your game. And if you do come back, feel free to drop me a tell in game =) Will be good to see how things are going.

You forgot the best part of those raides (well pre-graveyard zones anyway):
The 16 hour corpse run when some damm fool aoed the mezzed mobs.
Ahh those were fun times.

EQ at that level demands a level of discipline from it's players that I have not really seen in other games. That can be amazing when it works, and frustating when it does not.
Definately not everyone's cup of tea.
I'm interested to see how SOR's massive battles play out, should I ever see one (I'm time zone impared)

Oh yeah, if you think getting a group in SOR is bad, trying getting a group in EQ as a Druid just a level or 2 shy of getting your 75% heal spell. Thank god for quad kiting.

Wow! All I did was say "look how insane these encounters were," and look what happened :P

I loved EQ and I love Ryzom.

Hmm, I remember spending many work-day nights in the plane of fear dragging corpses 'til 5am then dragging my own corpse to work at 8am...good 'ole days ;)
