New player, new patch

Post by nimgimli »

I just started in Ryzom 2 nights ago. I've played maybe 3-4 hours.

All the talk about this new patch has me worried. I'm primarily a solo player; I really liked what little crafting I did, and the game reminded me of Horizons in some ways (a game I really enjoyed but got discouraged with because so many systems were more or less broken when I was playing).

So to my question. Will a new player be horrified by the patch? I mean, does it make the game BAD? Or is it more that things have changed a lot and people who were used to playing the game one way now have to re-learn it another? (I'm not passing judgement if that's the case...I've had that happen to me in other MMRPGs and I know how infuriating it can be.)

Basically I'm sitting here at work thinking "I really should've waited until the weekend and the free trial. Now I've spent $50 on a game that's apparently no longer any fun." That's the pessimist in me talking. I was hoping someone could shed some light on whether or not the glass is half full or half empty...

Thanks,

Nim

People just got too used to having things easy. Now that it is close to what it was suppose to be (well a little more difficult than it should be), everyone started to talk about how bad the patch is. There should not be lvl 200+ people in this game after what a month of release. People had it too easy and now they don't like it beacuse they need to work harder. Though I do believe that they went a bit too far with the changes not much but a little. It is still a good patch but they need to rethink a few changes.

This is pretty right on. The patch is hard for many experienced players because they've gotten used to doing things a certain way and now they have to re-learn what they can handle. That's not to say the patch is good or bad or that complaints about it are justified or unjustified, just that as a new player you should be fine since you won't have known any different and will developing your strategies fresh, not rtying to reinvent them. If people are right and the game is now too hard, you'll only benefit from the next balancing since you'll have learned conservative strategies fromt he get go.

Life is tough sometimes...people (Nevrax) make mistakes...its better to just move on rather than dwell on what could have been

Thank you all for the replies; they've been very encouraging.

One of the things that has totally delighted me so far is how cordial and friendly the in-game community has been. Nice to see that the boards are decent to; that a newbie can ask a question on the boards and not get flamed for doing so.

I actually agree. If this were a company with deep pockets like SOE I'd probably be all in a tizzy right now. But I'm willing to cut Nevrax some slack. They don't have the luxury of waiting forever to release so we get some speed bumps and some game play issues we probably shouldn't have (I especially think it's bad to have to wait so long for quests). So far the game holds enough promise and enough fun that I'm willing to wait and help fund the good stuff to come.

F you buddy....get the hell off my game. J/kin

As with any game we all have to conform and adjust to the rules set by the game. We must learn to learn to play within its limitations and deal with its inconsistancies. We must live with the constraints placed on us by the current computer capabilitis and abilities of programmers, which whom are humans, to produce a perfect program. We must accept the idea that perfection is not an option so long as every individual has a perception of what is perfect. We must live with the fact that human being have feelings and therefore can be construde as imperfect or a holes, by those who don't agree with the way they deal with certain aspects of life which promote intense feelings. We must realize that the universe cannot and will not conform to what our perception of perfection as an imperfect being living within its constraint try to impose on it. People must accept the fact that the universe's natural state is chaos and our feeble attempts to organize it will never succeed. (Use that one on your mom when she tells you to clean up your room.) The meaning of life is futility and all we attempt to achieve in our short lifetimes will only ultimately rot in the ground and become part of the great garbage heap we call earth. Now that you all know the meaning of life your all free to drop dead and leave me to alone to play Ryzom.

fuuuuuuwwww...glad i got that off my chest.

comments are welcome...because I won't read em anyhow.

I'm joking....accept for the part about the meaning of life....that part is true.

I see Ryzom still has fanboys. Funny, I kinda used to be one.

After this patch, Ryzom deserves the 5.6 out of 10 score it got from Gamespot, imho. Probably less. What bugs me is I heavily defended the game back when that article came out. Now I just give a *shrug* and ponder angrily the time wasted in this game.

At this point I'm watching WoW and EQII to basically decide which one I'm going to try next.

Some people confuse difficulty with monotony or vice versa. The people who are complaining are concerned about the latter not the former.
