Wtf! is this now? Adding in missions to help people level to 100?
With more hand holding to come?
I'm sorry but Missions leading us around a game world to help people level is totally not what this game needed.
Now don;t get me wrong I don;t mind Missions that give Fame or currency but to give them Skill XP rewards? Why not just add fame rewards to missions and Keep the skill Xp from Mobs?
Now we have to test these changes to see if its faster to level with missions, If it is these Devs basically turned Ryzom into a themepark where leveling is concerned.
I'm really pissed about this.
We don't need missions to help us level skills!

these are just a tiny missions that keep noobs occupied. we have not seen any of those yet and so dont know what the rewards really are, repeatable or not and how much story they tell. they might as well be just what ryzom needs to keep new people interested.
and what if noobs get to 250 in two weeks instead of three like it is now. It does not change a thing.

Re: We don't need missions to help us level skills!
Just implying that missions will help guide new players to skill level 100 is enough of a sign of hand holding for me.
I know what's going on the Devs seem to be giving Ryzom a themepark make over because not enough people subbed to the game.
Why else would they add in something like Missions that help you level? We already treat silan like its a joke why make the ML similar?
Edit: Newbs already have missions to keep them busy. A new player needs dapper for a mount, packers and apartment. They can easily pick up missions while exploring and gain currency and Fame so they could choose a faction. Why do they need more missions to help them level?

Meh.. it's hard to consider youself viable under lvl 100... Even part of a guild. I mean, the other point of concern with this patch was the change to afflictions, and the reason for that concern is cause it's hard for a lower lvl player to feel useful in a higher level group. It's even kinda disheartening at times to be part of a group where you feel like excess baggage.
So why not have some missions to help get folks to mid level. To help empower them to explore a region with a purpose without higher level chars doing the "hand holding"? I mean, really, one of the bigger issues in this game has been the overzealous helpfulness of higher level players taking all the excitement and challenge out of the game for lower levels, causing them to get bored or get that "gimmee gimmee" attitude that plagues other MMOs.
I can't see this as a reason to get all in a huff about the patch.. But that's just my thoughts..

You may, but alot of people, myself included, dont. Silan does a very good job allowing the completely new player to understand how Ryzom works, given that it is different the many of the other games out there.metalhead980 wrote: We already treat silan like its a joke why make the ML similar?
And its not a question of leveling skills, its about LEARNING the game, the world, and the way things around the lands work.
And in all honesty I am looking forward to trying out those missions myself as well, regardless of what the levels are.

In speech, be true.
In work, be competent.
In action, be careful of your timing.

Re: We don't need missions to help us level skills!
And still, nobody forces anybody to do any of these new missions.
New players might be used to such things from whichever game they came from and sadly may of then do leave because the don´t find these.
Only a minor percentage really does enjoy the fact that "Quests" are an unknown thing around Atys. It is a sad fact.
Giving new people the choice to either do missions or to leave them by the wayside, for me is quite a good compromise.
"Themeparking" would in my mind only occur all other options beside leveling would be patched out of the game and/or became absolutely moot because of am overwhelming flood of new "Quests" to do.
And by all means I don´t see that happening at the moment.
Granted, it may come to pass that there´ll be added more missions for higher levels too. But still, no-one is forced to do these, Atys still remains as open as it is, you´ll only have to decide for yourself how you want to play.
And btw. Missions have always been announced, from beginning to early end of Nevrax. There simply never was time/money to implement them. So, it´s nothing unexpected.
I for myself see these new missions as a breath of fresh air in a slightly stale environment.
Mind you, I´m as much a Fan of "our" Ryzom as you and the next Homin, but I do see the necessity to do a few things that might go against the grain of some of us, to get new life into the game.
And while I´m absolutely against "Themeparking" it, I don´t think that this is truly the intention here.
Additionally, while I despise the way some people just force their way to multiple 250s by catalyzed grind, it´s they´re way to play. It´s just the way it is. I don´t berate them on it. (Ok, maybe just a little )
But for example:
I absolutely don´t like strawberries.
Other´s would give their right arm for them. So what?
Do I condemn Strawberries?
No, I even like Strawberry flavored ice-cream, it´s just the texture of the raw fruit I absolutely can´t stand.
And I tolerate other people eating them in my presence and I wouldn´t think of leaving the room in a fit of rage because of that.
So, calm down and see what´s coming.
And maybe, just maybe you´ll even enjoy it and/or can tolerate it. To keep your stile of play and leave others to theirs.

I think it was a wise choice to add these missions, assuming they were done well, because I believe many new players will stay longer with them
long enough that they get to know more people and the game before making a decision to stay or leave. Right now many seem deflated when you tell them theres no missions like on Silan, and the missions are only for fame. A new player has not yet gained knowledge enough to have a clue why they would even want fame.

Re: We don't need missions to help us level skills!
One of the things I have always wanted to see, was the lower zones to stabilize a bit as Homin power expanded. I think bringing "civilization" and missions to "pacified" zones would add to the overall depth of the game and sense of a changeable world. However, this also includes opening new frontiers, expanding the sand box. Give the new player the benefit of the accomplishments of the experienced ones.
I would want to create some sort of mechanism so that new players could more or less compete with veteran players in some set amount of time (prolly 3 months). So that they could then jump into the "sandbox" and begin to shape Atys. I think missions would be on the top of my list of ways to make that happen. Cats would be at the very, very, bottom.
It is still my opinion that the easiest way for this game to be a marketable success is quick expansion. The current xp system allows for increases at will, that do not effect player character balance. I think the ring was envisioned as a developmental tool to be able to add zones quickly and cheaply. So, my vision would be a shifting "sand box" experience. With an emphasis on stabilizing and civilizing older zones, while opening up new territories that are more in line with the current style.
I am pro low level hand holding, I think it is actually a necessity. I think most of the major game structure flaws are centered around the things that make new players and new guilds as impotent as possible. If a small guild jumped ship from another game and wanted to create a home here, could it be done without being vassals to an older more established group. I would argue that they can not. I would further argue that is not in line with the overall theme of the game.
I realize it is an MMO, that a large part of the game is social cooperation, but that does not mean joining a game and being placed in caste system that can take years to advance an individual or groups status.
I am hopeful that the intent of these new missions is to address some of the extreme hardships that individual, self reliant players have when dealing with Atys. It made some sense when we were all new, but the established player-bases culture and abilities have grown, it is time for the sandbox to change.

Oh, and yeah, I don't mind the new missions. May even make a new toon to try them out.

My only concern is that these missions might be the heroic, ill-conceived, anti-immersion crap Silan stepped in. I will test every one of them...
