I'm liking SoR

Post by toperzer »

At first, I was really wondering where the fun was. But as I play a bit more, try out all the races, work on "getting it" as far as how the game works, etc, things are looking good! I have some questions so any help is appreciated.

I'm bringing up a Matis character. Started him out with three packs in Craft, because it just seemed the best way to start yourself out with good cash and the ability to make yourself weaps right off the bat. I've been working on fight and craft, and have bought my magic pack.

1. I'm a bit confused on what to put skill points into. There are so many things!! What's with the special attacks like attack humanoid arm, etc. What's a good strategy for using those type of skills.

2. I'm having trouble with making skills. My issue is in credit. I make a skill, but don't have enough credit choices to pay for anything.

3. I'm looking forward to the crafting aspect, but can you be an effective fighter and still keep craft up to speed? I assume that if you want to craft your own armor it will be tough. Weapons seem possible because there are less things to put skill points into. Am I right or totally wrong on that.

4. Are you limited in skill points by the level you are in an area? Does gaining skill points change at some point? In other words, are there a finite amount of skill points you can get.

Thanks, and I hope to actually group with someone soon!! I'm currently 15 in fight and 13 in craft. I'm going to grind out some magic points soon, but not sure if I can afford to worry about Harvest right now.

I'm a Zoraï, but I'll try to answer as best I can from what I've found. :)

There are PLENTY of skill points to get everything, just not all at once. It really depends on how *you* want to play and customize yourself. If you plan on grouping, but not being a primary fighter, for instance, then you don't need to worry too much about taunt or the 'after parry/dodge' credits, but rather, the increase damage/accuracy and HP credits (since you won't be getting hit, you can use a bit of your HP to give that extra 'umph'). The specific part targeting isn't critical when fighting animals, though if you get a critical when aiming, whatever special associated with that part will happen (stun for head hits, dodge negatives for leg hits, etc). When fighting humanoids, you can aim for spots that arn't armored (usually head). Most warriors I know ignore the aiming options.

If you just bought the stanzs, not the pre-made actions, you'll need to purchase the credit stanzas seperately. If you want to make combined actions (increase accuracy AND damage in one blow) then you'll need to purchase credits that are more expensive and usually seperate (located down at the bottom of the list). Also, you may not need to get those stanzas as soon as they are available as they usually out-strip your weapon and creatures you are (should) be fighting.

This really depends on what you mean by 'up to speed'. Crafting really isn't slow to keep high, just depends on how much dappers you want to put into it. If you don't enjoy crafting/harvesting, I'd not reccomend it, unless you have some people to keep you chatting it can, sometimes, get really boring (but there is something to be said about suddenly finding a vein of materials that you need, and working out exactly the best way to combine things! Hint, a mixture is usually better).

There are a finite level of skill points. However, it's much larger than anyone needs to worry about (having done a bit of math, there is over 24000 skill points in the fight tree).

No problem at all, if you need any help, send me a tell in game if I'm there and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions I can.

There are counterpart credit stanzas you are able to buy.. usually near the bottom of spell lists. These are stanzas you can use to balance out your skill edits. There are level caps to these, however, and you might not have access to higher credit stanzas til later.

I've been able to level my crafting fairly easily by doing crafting quests for armor in newbie land. The only thing you need to level crafting, really, is money. You can use store-bought mats to level up on and it goes very fast that way. Good thing about quests are, they usually provide enough dappers so that you're not losing any while levelling. It works quite well.

Of course, ideally, you would specialize on a specific branch of crafting, join a guild, and get help for the rest of your equipment that way. But if you want to be completely self sufficient I think it's very possible, as long as you invest some money into it.

Oh, and level your harvesting, if you want to make high quality armor for yourself.

Yes, sp is finite because it's gained by levels and the levels are finite. Therefore it's important to manage them well. For example, even if you're not a magic user it'd be good to level magic so that you could spend that sp on, lets say, increasing your hp. Even though you're able to do the same thing with fight sp, assumingly you'd want to use fight sp to better your melee skills instead.

Many players will tell you that Harvest is probably the most important branch in your skill tree. :p
Most guilds are always looking for players with high levels in harvest, and even if you don't plan on joining one, it will be nice to be able to get your own choice+ material instead of having to look for others to get it for you.
So my suggestion is, definitely level your harvest before leaving newbie land. It's far easier to do that there, and you'll most likely regret not having done so if you hit mainland without it.

hope that helps somewhat.
(sorry if some of this is repetitive for you but I'm sure it's repetitive for a reason ;) )
