Macbook + Ubuntu + WINE + Ryzom = Playable?

Post by xl2i5 »

Hello Friends,
Im in search of a little help. Im pretty sure I will figure out the path on my own, but thought id post a thread about it since I havent really seen anything on the forums that is my exact situation.

I am attempting to run Ryzom on a Apple Macbook. I have installed Virtual box, which allows me to run Ubuntu.. Which allows me to run WINE.. Henceforth hopefully allowing me to run Ryzom.

So where am i? I have installed Virtual Box and Ubuntu and WINE. Everything seems to be working correctly, other than the fact its stuck at 800x600 display dimensions. Im at the home stretch or so I think. I cant say im “familiar” with any of these systems except maybe MAC OS hahaha.

Sasi was really nice in pointing me in the right direction, but it seems that theres a split in the road. Should I try using the ryzom installer... Or should I just copy the ryzom folder from my windows machine?

I am at work right now. So I think ill try just copying the ryzom folder, I am aware of a dll file I need to put in the ryzom folder. Hopefully this will work.

I must add that I attempted to use Crossover Games application for Mac OS X..even followed a tutorial on their website.. It too wanted some dll files.. I have no idea if I did it correctly.. But it quickly became a headache... I tried installing it and configuring it around 3 different times in 3 different ways.

Does anyone have any pointers or info they would like to share about vitualbox/ubuntu/wine/correctly installing ryzom?

Thanks in advance,

only options are cider, crossover or http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX
you probably need these dll's in all three.

VMware fusion or parallels desktop do give (some) 3d acceleration, but that only for windows vm i think.

I see two problems in your setup.

The First is, that virtual box only allows you access to a virtual graphics card without 3d-acceleration.
The second is, that you need to run the client at a resolution of 1024x768 or higher, you may be able to raise the resolution by installing new graphics drivers from the virtual box guest additions.

Thank you for the help, blaah and thlau..

after i wrote this thread.. it became pretty obvious that theres got to be a better way... why do i need to run so many programs for 1 game? i think im going to leave everything where it is.. and go back to the crossover option.. or try to mess with the guest graphics settings like you said thlau.. or try to get wine to run on OSX.. virtual box does seem very limited.. i didnt know there was a minimum screen resolution either.

Im not really so concerned with having decent to good graphics, more so just something that is playable... It will probably just be a lunch-time dig machine. I imagine you are bringing up the 3d acceleration for performance issues though.. Ive already noticed running ubuntu through virtualbox, my macbook slips off the graphics edge.. Not like I can expect a lot from a 128 onboard card though.. And have played other games on my dual 2 ghz G5... 256 mb graphics card.. And it still is very “quirky”.. So ill assume even if I get this figured out it might be a bad idea.. I guess its more of a challenge to make it work with what I have. I know I could go out and buy parallels or vmware.. But trying not to spend any money, given the macbooks inadequate graphics card to begin with.

I just received another macbook, a little bit faster than the one im trying to do this on... It is a bit damaged.. But im working to repair it... Maybe if this macbook idea turns south, ill sell the one im repairing, and get a regular PC laptop.. Im definitely going to pursue this for a bit longer though.

I must say I do like ubuntu, though. So maybe ill still want to explore the idea of running ryzom on a PC Laptop if everything goes out the window.. :D

Hi Jezzer,

here's another option, though it probably is not what you want because it's based on windows:

1.) Install Bootcamp
2.) Install Windows XP
3.) Install Ryzom
4.) Enjoy the game

I've been playing Ryzom for almost a year on my MacBook that way and it was okay. Performance wise and graphics quality wise.

A Windows XP home edition (system builder version) can be shot for less than 80€ here. Dunno if that's available in your area though.

But yeah, it's not Linux and it's not free, but at least it's hassle free.

Cheers,
