If we're going to get into british colloquialisms

Spanner - a foolish person, "Kieran you spanner, read the question"
Plum - a foolish person, "Jonathan don't be such a plum, now sit down and get on with your work". This can also be used to refer to the male reproductive glands (you know, testicles) but never to the kids.
Muppet - a foolish person "You muppet. Now do the whole thing again"

As a teacher I have to find non offensive terms to call the kiddies when they mess things up.


We could also get into the whole differences in spelling, i.e. colour - british; color american. Must be why we always win at scrabble

And for the gastronomicically inclined, chips - british for french fries, crisps - british for chips, biscuits - british for cookies.
In education, University - british for college, Senior, or secondary, school - high school and finally for the car enthusiasts, bonnet - hood, boot - trunk and tyre - tire.

"Spanner" in German,
1. meaning, same as in brit. English (probably stolen by the Island-Apes )
3. meaning, "Schuh-Spanner" = That thing to keep shoes in shape when in the closet.
2. meaning, "Spanner" = slang for Voyeur
