question - boredom kills me

Post by dakhound »

ryzom being a pretty unique experience as far as mmo's go means many of us have struggled to find their place in other games, largely this is down to the close knit small community of people we have here and the friendships we have developed. If you transplanted our community to another game (say WoW) with our own server etc would that game be as good to you? If not what is it you love about ryzom as a game that makes it stand out from other games?

The community is of course very important. If we all agreed on another game, if ryzom never comes back, then I might reconsider. However, the differences are really big, and I doubt I would like any other mmo as much as Ryzom. The crafting and all skills differ, and many, if not all, mmo's only have one skill (fighter/mage) available at a time (plus crafting). In Ryzom you can do whatever you want. No limits how many skills you can have (well there are limits, but how many will master all skills?), which I like very much. I only got 6 masters, and 2 other high skills. Looking for more masters, and also level the alt's a bit.. :)

If the whole Ryzom community chose a different game and moved, dedicated server and all... then I'd play it. I wouldn't enjoy it as much, because no MMO out there has such a well-thought-out and different lore, world, and fauna. But I'd play it, and I'd like it, I think.

As a utopia i'd try it, but i doubt any chance of success, community stability was dictated by the occupational range offered by ryzom, you just didn't stay all day chatting even if this happened form time to time. Chatting was also fed by Ryzom typical happenings.

Besides I see no reason to pay a game for that when there are forums, discussion lists, blog structures, all which would give a support to community wihtout the need of a costly MMO, if it's not a similar class MMO. Finally if anything else fails Kaetemi could make us anytime a free Ryzom MUSH ,)

I loved Atys because the world was great to be in. Riding my Mek around listening to MP3's, going to my favorite spot to dig, and other RPG elements made Ryzom the coolest place to hang out. The community is great too, but I have found other communities that are also great.

However, no other game is the living world that Ryzom was.

yes and no..

in the last 7 montes, i playes Tabula rasa, Vanguard, Guild Wars, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Lotro, WoW and Rappelz (and a lot of other F2P)...always joining old Ryzom players.
I stayed more or less long in these games, because of my guilds made of Ryzomers but always cancelled my subs. All these games are quests and class games.
Quests....i dont mind doing some to gain some xp, but well....i really dont see why delivering a bottle of rhum could increase my sword experience...quest+quest+quest...boring
Class....well, people who know me ingame can attest...i dont have a lot of masters in Ryzom, reason is, after one week using a sword, i like to change and do some magic, then some digging, then some sword, etc... Only Ryzom gave me this opportunity. I simply cant always do the same thing for too long.
Some of these games were really fun to play at the beginning, but after few weeks....prisoneer of a class, doing your 327th quest, and god...no story, no lore... in ryzom, i loved to argue about my lore point of vue, tease my opponents etc...impossible on the other games.

[edited] and i forgot maybe the biggest idiot result of unique skill/class game... you're unable to team with friends/guildies if they are lower level than you...at least in Ryzom you could level your 1H staf to play with a newbie friend, even if you are AoD...[/edit]

I miss the complex craft system, the peaceful and dangerous dig, the real freedom in all skills, the fight system, the verbal fight with my opponents....and the plod teams.

....and i'm so bored seeing idiot kids jumping all day long and trying to duel me 10 times in a row.......

So yes, i miss playing a mmo, i miss playing it with my friends and would love playing it against/with my ryzom ennemies
and no, i think i'll not stay long because of boredom

nice summary.. agree with you on most accounts..ive totally switched my view on ryzom though, i am probably less eager than most of you.. i think thats because i took ryzom so seriously before the close.. now i cant invest that time and energy.. so i politely sit on the sidelines, waiting. who knows how long "soon" will be. the hope of one day being able to run around in ryzom, is idea that i cant give up.. just like the memories of ryzom will never be forgotten. i really hope people dont get too frusterated with the waiting. itd be a shame to lose a lot of you.

try to look at the big picture and not the details.

If the whole communtity moved to another game, with our own server and all, then I'd follow and play it, and I'd probably like it. But, I do not think it would be sustainable.

Firstly, the past months have clearly demonstrated that just because we all find Ryzom the best MMO, doesn't mean we all have the exact same taste in MMOs. We're never going to find one game that everyone agrees on. But okay, let's assume for the sake of argument we do manage to get everyone into the same game.

Then the problem still remains that, over time, people leave and new people join, as in any community. And it is my belief that the community that develops in a game has much to do with what kind of people that game attracts. Our community is the way it is because it's small, but also because it's made up of people who enjoy Ryzom. And as long as we're in Ryzom, the people that leave will be succeeded by other people who enjoy Ryzom.

But if we transplant our entire community to a WoW server, then as people leave and new people join, it would slowly shift into a community of people who enjoy WoW.

I'm not saying this has to be a bad thing, just saying that 'transplanting' a community only works in the short term. In the long term it's no different from just joining the existing WoW community (or whatever community you're transplanting to). So while I'd join you all to WoW, I'd already be looking for a game that suits me better in the long run.

This could warrant it's own thread, but okay, I'll give it a shot. :)
  • Unique lore/background/setting. There's always going to be stereotypes ofcourse, but just copying elves and orcs again is plain lazy.
  • Complex crafting and playerdriven economy. Torbaks aren't supposed to drop better armors than any player can craft. No, not even if it's the three-headed undead boss torbak.
  • Freedom of choice. This includes the skill-based system instead of being locked into a class. But it's more than that; it's the ability to do anything you want without having to make multiple characters. So also: Ryzom's option to convert your Karavaneer character to Kamist whenever you want, as opposed to WoW forcing your character to eternally be the same faction. I could go on...
  • Living world. This one is hard to capture. Basicly it's how much the world feels like a real world that just exists on it's own even if there aren't any players in it, and how much it feels like the entire world is just one big quest that revolves entirely around the player. WoW seemed like a beautifull world to me until I realised every area, every landmark, everything of interest is part of some quest. Then the illusion broke.
  • EVE made me add this last one: No obsession with PvP. I'm not opposed to PvP being part of the game and I've much enjoyed the OP battles in Ryzom, the battlegrounds in WoW, etc. But EVE, despite having all 4 previous points very well done, was just unbearable to me because of it's complete fixation on the PvP element. If taking all the PvP out would mean the MMO looses 80% of it's playerbase, that's not the MMO for me.

And yes, this one I just have to quote too. It goes for pretty much every MMO I've played besides Ryzom. :)
