A few weeks ago everyone was overjoyed at the news of Ryzom's return. Personally, I want the game to now continue no matter the changes but I get the impression that many want the old Ryzom back, which is fine. However, it is my belief that this will just lead to more liquidation.
The game has changed a lot since launch. Update 1 scared a lot of people away when things got more difficult. The Windermeer/Arispotle merge changed the dynamic of the community. The temple wars changed it again. Faction PVP and outposts were massive additions and even the lore seems to have subtley changed to encourage conflict. The community is currently a message-board one, part reminiscence, part eagerly awaiting a 'new' game.
Throughout these changes people left and people joined. I think the community will evolve whatever the devs throw at us and that there will always remain a core of great people.
But what do you think? If Ryzom became a free-to-play, single-server game with all characters wiped and no official events, no Ring etc. would you continue?
And perhaps a more loaded question: If Ryzom had been resurrected by someone who hacked together a server, like those unofficial WoW servers, which would have had all the cuts listed above... Would you have played on that?

Re: Do you want the game to survive at any cost?
There are costs and.. costs
Free to play, one server, total wipe of old chars, no ring - all these would have consequences of course and not very good ones, or not all good...
For me these are sacrifices that I could bear, at least for some months.
But there are other costs that i fear, technically it is not so complicated to transform Ryzom in a quest driven game mrrr, also the dig/craft most of us love so much can be at any time "simplified" for the use of ... errm dolphins
There is a possibility to transform Ryzom into a very aggressive pvp arena, I mean the Ryzom landscape, the game would be obviously dead as we knew it.
These are changes that can make money to some extent but which would also make me come back to the idea I had when leaving LotrO: there is no MMO for me for some 5-8 years from now on.
Hackers? I wouldn't love it too much and even if I wished so much to play I know a thing or two about the technical quality of such servers to say no thanks veeeery quickly.

Re: Do you want the game to survive at any cost?
Sorry boss, i'm not sure i really understand this post completely O.o
If Ryzom were to become F2P and left alone and done with, i think i would continue to play - if everything remained the way it was. We've seen a small taste of that on the new Silan updates (always free with limits) and i've found that for the most part - 'typical' mmorpgers don't really understand 'zom and get frustrated with it. i think it may last longer than most would expect...
But, i think i'm with you - i want the game back, either in the way it was in the old days or the way it's going now. I've been here for just about all of it (albeit in different characters) and i've seen it change. So far, it's taken a few funky turns but all in all - they're nothing i'm completely against. I say, bring it back to us however you can - i just want in

yes I want the game back at any cost, but if the cost is TOO great I won't stay. I think that goes for most of us.
3:1, 2:1, 1:1 ... probability factor of one to one; we have normality. I repeat: we have normality. Anything you still can't handle is therefore your own problem.

its like a cry out for advertisement and content then yer i would be willing too pay more
Re: Do you want the game to survive at any cost?
I'm still a little iffy on some of the details but what I know I need to continue playing is my characters, my levels & my gear all intact; my guild and guild hall, and all game content thats been added to date. (well maybe except the wheel )
OPs as they were when we left and a secure Ring would be preferable also, but I guess not vital.
Then it's the toughy: Future updates and content.
Do I want another 2yrs+ of bugger all new content. No, I really, really, don't!
Due to the prolonged downtime, we've been forcibly detached from Ryzom, I'm not sure I want to let myself get too attached again now without the prospect of real improvment and progress.
So far it doesn't seem like our new mysterious owners have the money nor expertise to follow through, which means they'll just be following in the footsteps of both previous owners, and we all know what that means 12 months or so down the line. Nothing changes, the pot runs dry, and we're back up for sale.
I just don't think I can stick that.
Sorry for the negative vibes, but it's how I feel.
Just don't wanna risk getting my hopes up again. >.>

No.
If changes like Boinged describes, or worse, were to occur, no matter how much I love Ryzom's mechanics, lore, environment, and graphics, and no matter how many people I know stay, I will not play. If the option to pay in any way remains, I won't pay either. Whomever would do that to Ryzom would be listed, in my mind, shortly above SOE, who is shortly above EI Interactive.
There are other ways. Incompetence was the cause of most of Ryzom's financial failings, and the rest of the causes were the fault of the audience.

Re: Do you want the game to survive at any cost?
I'm pretty sure of what i want: I want the Saga of Ryzom back.
If it turns in another clone it will be just another bigger failure than it already was.
LOL,
now that many many players on the net are crying because of how the mmorpg evolved in the last years (ty Blizzard), and really are demanding something new, that means something old: *sandbox* mmorpg or, at least, skill-based mmos;
now that there so many players that just were *adapting* to the new releases (VG, Lotro, AoC, even back to WoW), just waiting for a better future (TCoS, WELL, Darkfall etc...);
now that there is *only 1* mmorpg sandbox, and it is only sci-fi, and it is only for hardcore players, that's EVE;
you wanna change the whole game?
I don't know, it can works, maybe it's possible to turn Ryzom in a L2 clone more than a WoW clone, but really I can't imagine this.
I really think there is still a big room for Ryzom in his original concept and attract all the *sandbox* lovers that are still waiting for a game that exists since 2004 and they never known...
We always attacked Nevrax because of it's bad management, but really you forgot that Nevrax could not imagine at all how devastating would have been the WoW release (in the same year). More, considering the main investors were playing on both frontlines, it's clear that Nevrax was abandoned in favour of the other, because the 'market' was telling that.
Now the situation is a bit different.
Of course, improvements and features are needed.
The game can't stay static as in the last year.
But keep the original vision and Ryzom can became a success at least as EVE, if properly managed. Rigorously imho.

If it changes for the worse in all the ways that Boinged described, I probably wouldn't play it. However I'd still probably frequent the forums for as long as the good of the community was there, if it too was taken over by 12-year-olds who can't type or do anything but complain, I'd probably leave the forums then too. However I don't see those kind of dramatic changes happening, but then again we never really know unfortunately...or fortunately, depending how it turns out.
