Just by the numbers on this poll the obvious desire of the community is no wipe.

Sure it may bring back some old players for a little while.

But honestly if they are unsatisfied with the situation they won't stick around for very long anyways. We will be back to where we were eventually anyways.

It's quite obvious we'd risk losing alot more people then we'd risk gaining.

As for it being more new player friendly. I think such an action would scare off new people. Personally from a new player standpoint I would not want to play a game that has wiped the servers after people have had a few years of playing. As a new player I would not want to waste my time on a game that may possibly erase my character in another year.

The main issue seems to be that older players think it will help refresh the community in terms of outposts and such? Not really. I don't really know what kind of experience people have had. I never had any trouble getting cats. Even is I was guilded karavan or even unguilded for awhile. Kami were more then willing to help me level, and share cats, and mats. Same for karavan. I keep hearing people saying about how they have lost friends, and had alot of tension occur from outposts. I can't recall ever losing a friend over something so silly. Even if tension arrises, it's quite short lived, I think most people in this community are kind, I'm amazed how many I have stayed in touch with.

This game is really designed for a teaming mentality it seems. Something most if not all other games discourage until people master. That's one of the major things about this game, you can take someone newly off the island and help them level, by using one of your low skills. If you've ran out of skills to help noobies with, make a new character, or help them our of team like I've done alot of times, by stunning the mobs they are killing if they are having trouble hitting, or healing them when they die (don't keep them fully healed, give em a challenge). Not only have I made quite a few friends by helping out lower level people, but It adds quite a level of fullfillment, making playing more meaningful. To me this is the essence of what ryzom is, and a wipe, would turn the game into a mad rush for levels, and outposts for several months. Which I feel would hurt the community.

Given that a wipe would be required to play the game again, I would willingly make the sacrifice, though it would cripple the community for awhile.

I voted no

Its not because of all the hard work and millions of hours crafting and digging i did, but because oof the fond memories I had in this game, the friends the bonds, the guilds, the factions. If it wipes it wipes out a part of my life and that cant be redone no matter how many millions of hours one has, it cant recreate the love, the heartbreak, the friendships and the family.

Voted No.

Ryzom is a saga - why whipe it? How about a new title for characters that experienced the lag, the shut down - instead?

Lol if you want to new start - start a new character - or buy a new box. 0_0

When the game re-opens who knows what the community will evolve into - but even with a wipe there will still be pvp and outposts and players who love the battles, the politics the drama! Also there will always be players who want to dig in the sand and build castles - whose style of play is well playing and not levelling.

Like I said Ryzom isnt merely a game - recycling quest fest - it has history, it has characters - its a living planet.

Well put Misa. :)

I think it's important here to distinguish between fact, and stating opinion as fact. "A wipe is the best option" is the latter, of course, as are all statements to the contrary. A wipe is an option. Fact. Of course it may be that a wipe is unavoidable in which case as I said earlier we just have to sit back and take it. I doubt that is the case however.

I disagree strongly that a wipe would attract new players. Regardless of Ryzom's past problems, it is a living, vibrant community which would only be filled with regrets and melancholy tales of "back before the wipe we ..." from those who have lost lots, which I doubt very much would be appealing to new players who would look upon it as "a bunch of whiners" I have no doubt.

I took two years to reach my first (and only) master. Telling me it can be done again in a few weeks is no consolation - I simply have no wish to play that way and I think there are many others of the same opinion. I play slowly, I take my time and smell the roses, I stop and chat, I spend hours trying to sneak the unsneakable and the feeling of achievemant when I do far outweighs that of powergrinding 0-250 in 3 weeks of one-dimensional gaming. New players in any MMO never enter into a level playing field, nor do they expect to, so why expect them to be attracted by that? There are no precedents (to my knowledge) to base that assumption on, and no evidence to support it. A new game is a new game, sure, but Ryzom is not a new game, any more than a second hand car is a new car and when buying a second hand car, it would be ridiculous to expect it to have that "new car" smell. No matter how many times you send it to the valet or put it through the car wash, Ryzom is never going to have that "new car" smell, and no new players are going to be fooled by a superficial "new game"-flavoured air freshener!
3:1, 2:1, 1:1 ... probability factor of one to one; we have normality. I repeat: we have normality. Anything you still can't handle is therefore your own problem.

I want a "new-game" air freshener for my car! :D

Other observations:

When I was born, there were grown-ups already in the world. The world was still new to me. Sometimes the grown-ups helped me, and sometimes I went on my own and learned things the hard way. As I matured, some of those grown-ups disappeared, and I began to fill their roles, helping newer children.

Which world am I talking about?

Both.

I wasn't there for the beginning of the saga. I love Atys and its story anyway. Maybe even more, because to me Atys has history and legends as well as memories. My hope is that when Atys returns, others will have the experience I had, joining a story already in progress, with helpful older people to ease the transition and give a good start. I hope I am able to pass on the legends I was told, and the memories I shared, which will become legends in their own right. Eventually I too shall pass away from Atys, though I trust that day lies far in the future. I hope, in the time I have remaining, to help create more memories which will endure, and will bring smiles to the faces of homins everywhere.

gcaldani wrote:It would be not a problem for me to restart from scratch, anyway I voted 'no' and the reason is really well explained by Dentom in this post at mmorpg.com:

Dentom's post at mmorpg.com

He wrote the original post in the Ryzom's german forum.

I think he expressed well his reason, and I agree with him.

Dentom's post summed it up for me as well. I can see only one good reason to do a wipe, and that would be if Atys had changed (I.e. some areas that had been goo-filled were now cleared, some areas had sunk and others risen, etc.) If the world is new, then the history has already been changed and a fresh start would work (a lot of the operational reasons as opposed to the emotional reasons would also be gone).

My best wish would be for toon retention with a couple of new areas (and I haven't even come close to exploring the old ones yet) and possibly a few new stanzas that could be learned for those who are "old in the game".

not everyone uses an alt to heal themselves and hence cant grind non stop like the real grinders did, if you want a wipe, delete your toons, if you want outposts, fight for them, if you want old mega guild glory days back, you gonna have to work for it. Cho was especially a peice of crap server which was a mistake from the start.

I sure wont be going through it all again.

obviously the community nearly all agree

most of the players who want a wipe are low lvl players or players who have alts to boost up! witch wouldnt matter to them so much.... cause come on if ya own a alt the games like 10 times easier! (im so gettin a alt when games up lol)

for the players with single accounts it would really hit them in the teeth!

THINK! NO WIPE AND REMOVE THIS THREAD! PLEASE!

i like that comparison, sasi<3.

i was in the middle on this until i read Den's statement, which almost made me cry. its crazy to think we all care about a game this much.. but we do. its amazing for sure. i dont want to lose my jezzer for anything.. if a wipe happened yes i could remake her, or make her daughter/son whatever.. but the history would be lost in a sense. how would i get my jinxed title back? hahah ya i went there..

i understand both sides of the argument but like many have pointed out, a wipe would only destroy us further. yes it might be a better way to start (which is why i was in the middle and was in favor of a wipe at the beginning), but i for one will be first to say my past almost 2 years of playing.... will probably take me close to 4 years playing under a new toon. this doesnt mean i wont try.. as others have said.. i have been through it already... wheres the motivation to spend all that time to get back to the same point?

DISCLAIMER! (Maybe im just nuts for thinking this)

i dont know if anyone has said this already.. but its a thought that crosses my mind, maybe im crazy (please tell me i am)... from the owners point of view.. wiping the servers will provide a clean slate. the game is up and running.. they have less information to deal with. we all make new accounts.. we put in all our payment options again... everything is new, current, up to date... but they may also want to do this because they do not have all our old information in order. what if some of our accounts have been tainted, lost, destroyed. in a way, all the old account info from the servers is sort of useless, the thing they really care about is the actual game.. they probably had old accounts from when the game started.... years after these accounts had been cancelled. what do they do with all this info? keep it on file or trash it and be assured they have accurate information? just a theory. sigh.

Well, I have my doubts about how true that is.
squire20 wrote:if ya own a alt the games like 10 times easier! (im so gettin a alt when games up lol)
I don't give a yubo's butt about making it easier. Heck, make it harder! I quit the cats so I wouldn't ding so danged fast.

squire20 wrote:for the players with single accounts it would really hit them in the teeth!
The teeth being hit would be those who care deeply about the character they have developed, and the history they have created, and the Saga. Dings come easy, alt or no alt. That other stuff is irreplacable.

squire20 wrote:THINK! NO WIPE AND REMOVE THIS THREAD! PLEASE!
Actually, I think this thread is a great tool to argue against a wipe.

In any case, given that the faceless new owners have our old forum data, and apparently Aniro is up (but locked), I am of the opinion that all this wipe talk is needless fear. Have faith! Atys lives! SOON!

Every bit of data about every account that ever existed amounts to practically nothing in data storage terms. I wouldn't worry about the data being lost or corrupted. Any half-decent RDBMS could reliably handle that much data throughput in seconds (or less). The only concern would be intentionally tossing out the data, and I honestly can't think of any useful reason to do that. Nor is there any evidence of an intent to do so.

P.S. Jezzer was one of my grown-ups. :D
