Maybe they do because that is what it's like. You get a decent server for running the shard including "electricity and AC" for around 200 euros per month. For nodes that the users connect to, you can use cheaper machines, which you get at around 60-80 euros per month everything included. You'll need maybe 3 "fat" machines and half a dozen cheap ones, so unless you run something as huge as World of Warcraft you can really get away with roughly 1,000 euros per month for the tech stuff. A few hundred users are easily enough to sustain that.

However, staff such as for example developers or game masters are extremely expensive, because you not only have to pay for their income, but also for part of their social insurance, casualty insurance, and lastly they need an office equipped with computers, which isn't free either. You have to cover holiday and sick leave, and other factors may swallow up huge unexpected amounts of money too without rising productivity (work council, educational leave, pregnacy, anyone?).
Thus, all in all, you can expect that a single employee effectively costs you 4,000-6,000 euros per month. Now imagine you have 20 or 30 of them (which is not much), that can easily exceed 100k per month, and a few hundred subscriptions won't cover for it.

mm move the game to a country where educated labour isn't so problematic?

Somewhere between the US and Azerbaidjan should be one with less insurance needed per capita. Syndicalism not always helps development of small business :)

Hmm between US and Azerbaijan... lemme see. Well that surely isn't Russia - that's where they try to kill all small business under the guise of nurturing it :(
I know cause i own one... (48 staff) How would you like 76% combined tax?

And ok - insurance is not an issue here at all, really...

PS: Sorry to derail - couldn't help it - my sore spot kinda :(

wow, that's a juicy tax rate. something different than the +/- 12% you get in my place (Switzerland and depending where in Switzerland and of course only if its profitable otherwise you get tax credits).

Wouldn't it be an idea to have the company in a place like mine and outsourcing the development work to someplace like india or china?

...at least that's what I would be thinking about was it my biz

Wow, with all the complains I hear about how all our jobs are disappearing to india and china, it's refreshing to hear people actually encouraging it :p
