Help with names!
Not that I'm complaining about some of the names that I've seen, in general, they've been much better here than in many many others.

Naming help!
Re: Naming help!
You know whats funny? You're the 20th person I've met with a name beginning with an R, a Y somewhere in the name, and ending with an N.

I never claimed to be original.
It's Celt for 'Fern', which is somewhat appropriate for a Zoraï I figure.

Ahh nice to meet you Fern. I usually don't talk to plants, unless they talk back

How does a name taken from a Celtic word reflect Science Fantasy?

Because it's a 'dead' language and departs from most of the anglo/english rules for names, and because of the meaning behind it. If I hadn't told you it was Celt, for example, would you have known?
For that matter, why in game do we use english or german or french, or any other real language, how come we all arn't using Homin/Matis/Tryker etc? The answer is because we weren't brought up in these alien cultures using different grammer and vocabulary, there-fore we have to have some basis to build upon.

Re: Naming help!
If you consider the Tuatha de Dannen a race of aliens who visited earth centuries ago, who first visited the celts and experimented with them. Their experiments gave some of the Celts "Second Sight" or psionic powers which have been watered down since that time. Celtic names are therefore appropriate, as they fit into the whole Science Fantasy Mythos.
Example fiction :
Starsong - Dan Parkinson
Strands of Starlight - Gael Baudino
Darkover series - Marion Zimmer Bradley
The Non-Born King - Julian May
All of these stories talk about powers that were born into humans from some celtic heritage. The last novel deals with exactly the senario I mentioned above.

Re: Naming help!
I was at a loss for names, myself. I could have used the ones I'd picked up from the Kushiel's Scion series, but they were the names of my vault toons on EnB. Considering my first SoR toon is a Tryker, naming her Phedre would have been very appropiate.

Lucky me I stumbled upon a news story about naming a baby elephant and since she was from Thailand, there were 6 names to choose from.
Soma is Thai for beautiful eyes and the Trykers do have those. There was a mild tweak of a memory when I saw the name but it took another guildmate to remind me it's also the name of the drug in Huxley's Brave New World. It's also Greek for "body" and a drug used in Eastern Indian religious ceremonies.
I didn't do too badly ...

Not celt... but Welsh
The celt language is dead, and we hardly have any traces of it except from it's offspring languages in the various versions of gaelic (irish, welsh, manx, scottish, breton, etc)
Welsh, Irish and so on are not dead languages, their archaic forms are no longer used, but the modern versions of it are still spoken nowadays by a small percent of the population
