I understand the concern that you feel you may have "missed the boat". There still is a lot to do in this game though. I am having a blast playing it.

Note about the no AU servers...I am aussie too -- and my ping hovers at 600 pretty much all the time (this sounds bad, but not so much -- not a FPS after all). That said, given that there is less than 1000 people on Arispotle (english server), the ping is constant -- I never suffer from it even in big outpost battles because the netcode behind ryzom is pretty solid. That said, this has everything to do with low population right now. If it grew say 1000 players suddenly, might become intolerable for us...but there are other aussies in game and I never heard them complain about ping
