An open Letter to all new Players

First of all, I'd like to thank Acridiel for the thoughtful post and the edits to add even more good thoughts.

I may have a fairly rare outlook on things Atysian, as Ryzom is my very first MMO. Indeed, it is the first computer game I've played more than two or three times. After spending some time in the Ruins of Silan, I played another MMORPG for a week or two to compare - and came running back here.

I am certainly not an experienced gamer in the computer sense, but in a long lost era I spent many an hour poring over my AD&D manuals (version 1.0) and reading Fantasy and SciFi novels until my shelves overflowed. (I have more shelves now!)

Given that background, Ryzom has been a real treat so far. The openness, the wealth of possibilities, the creativity that can, and indeed must, be put into it. I relish the opportunity to live out fantastic roles in a visible and auditory manner which up until now remained in the realm of imagination.

Though the technology has and imposes certain limits, I stand amazed at the foresight with which the developers created a platform upon which players may create further, rather than forcing or even enticing them into pre-crafted scenes. As one who has toiled at the keyboard writing code, I am compelled to tip my hat in respect.

So then, I'd recommend to other new players to approach this as something other than a game. Approach it as a work of art, a craft to be learned and never quite perfected. Fun need not be effortless, nor mindless. Indeed, in my years on planet Earth I have learned that those things which require time, patience, and effort are in the end by far the most rewarding.

And by all means never lose sight of the fact that level 250 in anything will not feed your family. Nor will anyone outside Atys be the least bit impressed. Quite the opposite, I expect. So do what you do for yourself, heed not the baying of the gingos at your heels, and wear a grin at all times!
