As this is the one of the most asked questions in Universe Chat, I would like to request an official stance on the issue that we could point to. It is oft asked "Is there any way to change the zoom level for the camera" to which the most common answer given is "It can be changed by editing the cfg file but that's against the rules and will negate your right to tech support". And then there's the inherent contradiction in saying that it's against the rules to edit the cfg file when Tech Support often instructs one to do the same to disable the background downlaoder.
Here are the applicable rules as I see them on the web site:
13. INFORMATION AND DATA SENT BY THE USER.
The information and data communicated or sent by the User in the course of his/her use of Ryzom must not .... make unauthorized changes to the Ryzom and the Ryzom Ring softwares or servers.
OK, so since editing a cfg file doesn't get sent by the user anywhere, I'm not sure that applies.
1. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
This work is copyright. Material from the Ryzom Services may not be copied, reproduced, republished, downloaded, posted, broadcast or transmitted in any way except for your own personal non-commercial home use. Any other use requires our prior written permission. You agree not to adapt, alter or create a derivative work from any of the material contained in this site or use it for any other purpose other than for your personal non-commercial use.
Again, this says alter material contained on "this site" so not sure that is applicable as the cfg file isn't part of the web site.
CODE OF CONDUCT
10. You will not attempt to interfere with, hack into or decipher any transmissions to or from the servers running Ryzom and on any Ryzom Services or Gameforge France Services.
11. You may not exploit any bugs in Ryzom and you may not communicate the existence of exploitable bugs (either directly or through public posting) to any other user of Ryzom but report it to Gameforge France.
Ok so here it says can't hack into transmissions to and from servers...as camera is client side to my understanding, not sure of applicability here. And is this a bug ? If not, applicability in question.
I didn't read every word in detail but think I hit most of the possibly applicable portions. Please understand that this is not in support of changing camera zoom, arguing whether it should be allowed or whatever but the simple situation is we have conflicting instructions being given by "official sources".
1. Don't ever change the cfg file it's against the rules.
2. If you are having problems or want to play 2 clients go in and edit the cfg file.
I have seen peeps receive an "official warning" for saying "yes it can be changed by editing cfg file". So as to be able to answer a player's question on the topic w/o risking the ire of CSR or others, might I suggest and official posting here on the topic (apologizing in advance if its here already) which we can point to the link and say "read this".
The best I can come up with at this point is:
You may have heard that the camera zoom can be changed by editing the cfg file but editing this file is against the rules unless specifically directed to do so by official GF representatives. If you do so, without such authorization, you forfeit the right to tech support.
Since you guys have a better handle on your policies and position, I'd much prefer to refer to your language.
Camera Zoom Clarification
Re: Camera Zoom Clarification
You may not use any GameForge owned systems to convey information on how to make unauthorized/unapproved modifications to the configuration files.
Unauthorized modifications to your cfg files will result in forfeiture of all technical support until such time that the file is restored to its standard configuration.
With this said this post is closed to further posting.
