client crash/freeze

I'm having crashes and freezes all over the place. Sometimes it happens just when i start the client and sometimes I get as far as character selection, but never further. The OS always recovers, with a message that the video driver has crashed.

Its obviously a graphics card thing. I'm running Vista 32 with a GeForce 8800 GTX, with the nevest drivers and Vista fully updated. This is the only game I have had problems with so far. At one time I got this crash message:

Please ensure that you are actually configured to run under direct3D and not relying on the autodetect feature to switch the games graphics mode. This can cause the lockups you describe as well as articfacts that are mentioned in this tech support thread
