Hello, Ryzom community!
i just signed up for the trial and am really impressed!
Got a few quick questions, though.
Are there levels in this game? If so, how do they work?
As this seems to be the most sandbox-y mmo out right now, I assume that combat is not required to be successful in this game. (I can craft or harvest and have fun, for example.)
Thanks in advance and see ya in game!

Re: New to the game..and having so much fun!
Welcome! Glad you're enjoying yourself
There are levels- but not one overall. When you start, you are level 1 in the four basic skill trees: fight, magic, harvest, craft. Using one of those skills will gain XP towards increasing your level in that skill. If you go out and do nothing but dig, harvest level will go up while the rest stay at 1, for example.
Those four basic trees also split into more specialized things as you progress. At level 21, magic for instance becomes offensive magic and defensive magic. If all you do is heal, you'll progress in defensive magic, while offensive stays at 21. More splits like that continue to happen at 51, 101, 151.
You can progress in any and all skills that you like! Doing one will never limit you from doing another as well, aside from how much free time you have to put into it.
Oh, and you are correct, combat is not required. You can spend all day every day harvesting and crafting and get along just fine. I would certainly recommend picking up some heal levels- its nice to be able to heal and resurrect people you pass in your travels. The fact that you can do everything without limitation means there's always something different to switch it up though, if you need a change of pace.
We're a helpful bunch, any and all questions are welcome. Enjoy your stay!

I would recommand to get combat skills anyway. As a harvester, you will surely want to travel to wherever the material quality fits your need and as your skill will grow, you will therefore need higher quality skills. So you will have to travel to those higher quality spots. But traveling alone without any combat skills can be dangerous. If you are planing to be part of a team or guild, then ok, do not get combat skills and concentrate on your crafting skills.sehracii wrote:Oh, and you are correct, combat is not required. Most of all, have fun and do not be shy to ask any questions in-game. You will find alot of help.

thanks for the responses guys!
I guess the next thing to do is to find a guild.

Take your time on joining a guild. It is a very big choice in the game and will effect how people see you.

Traveling alone WITH combat skills can be just as dangerous.browserice wrote:But traveling alone without any combat skills can be dangerous.
I think combat skills can be a bit distracting from the task at hand.

My harvest was always highest when I was "growing up." I just accepted the fact that I could not kill anything where I was digging and made it a point to avoid dangers. I think that method has some merit, as no matter what your combat is there will be things you cannot kill, and knowing other ways to deal with it will make you a good harvester.
My main point is do combat, don't do combat, do it slowly on the side, whatever. You will get by fine with any choices you make- and since these are all your choices and not what you "need" to do, you will have more fun.

I agree, do not put all your time and ressources on combat. Specialize in harvesting first, then bit by bit do what every other skills you want.sehracii wrote:Traveling alone WITH combat skills can be just as dangerous.

The trial is the same as the registered version with only 2 exceptions :
- you are restricted to play on an island seperated from the rest of the game world. This island named Silan is where all new players (registered or not registered) start. Therfore you play with all registered player that are still on the island. The only way to leave the island is to register.
- your experience points (or skill points) are limited to 20 (or 21 I don't remember)
I say do play the trial. It will give you a basic idea on how it is. Once you leave the island, the world is way much bigger then the island and it is less mission oriented. On the mainland (outside the island), there are still missions but they mostly are just to be payed in money. But you can still increase your skills.
