just when i think i've seen everything!

Post by zengrath »

Hey everyone! I'm downloading this game as i type this :) . I have played tons of MMORPG's, and every time i play them i enjoy it for the first few weeks or maybe even months for some, but always end up very disappointed.

I looked through mmorpg.com's list desperately trying to find a MMORPG that is different from the rest. I like freedom in a game. I want a game that i can explore, fight, make things, and have freedom in doing what i like with little restrictions. I also want those things to be hard at the same time while not causing me to feel like I'm waisting my time, I want it to be challenging yet rewarding.

I hope that i found the right game. I have read reviews in the past, which where very bad reviews, But i was recently reading a forum somewhere (forget where it was) and a bunch of people said how this game has improved a lot and was worth another look, So i ignored the reviews and started reading some recent user reviews on gamespot and it seems true.. It has gotten better and worth another look.

So that is what convinced me to check this out.

Sorry if that was a long post but i like to talk :) I'm a talker. But anyway, I have a few questions.

1. I see it's pretty unrestrictive reading the basic info on the website, but being unrestrictive, is there still a decent economy in the game where say maybe blacksmiths put a lot of their time into creating weapons and selling them, only to buy say other needed things from other crafters? Or because of the unrestrictive nature most people tend to create their own items or from guildies mainly. the 2nd would be perfectly fine with me, as long as there is a feeling of accomplishment of making things that overcome the loss of game economy like say WoW's auction house..

Biggest thing that makes me excited about this game reading it is the ALIVE factor, I am tired of games that make you feel like your grinding, just to be at a competitive level in pvp or end-game stuff, only to be disappointed that that's all it is about.

I enjoyed WoW but the one thing that bugged me more in WoW then any other MMORPG is that the world didn't feel real at all, I had no connection with anything, instances where a great idea, and other things like that, but it made the world feel less lifelike, I enjoyed the original Everquest, It was the first 3d MMORPG i played when i was a kid, and it really felt like i was apart of this huge world, Although i have a lot of grudges over SOE's games today, after being disappointed over the restrictiveness and time wasting aspects of their games.

I also really enjoyed Anarchy online (which i played after eq1) because it felt more open then EQ1, less restrictive and the world felt like a living world, although sci-fi it still felt like there was endless possibilities (although eventually that faded as i learned about the skill/stat system and other things of that nature became more and more restrictive)..

SOrry again for the long post, but hopefully it won't bother too many people.

2. The unrestrictiveness of the adventure skills seems awesome too, but i'm a little weary of them as well, for one, If someone masters all the skills in a few very different area's like mage/melee/ranged, How does one switch between or combine those? Is it restrictive in which skills you can use at one time like Guild Wars? where there is great strategy in choosing the correct skills, or is it very open in terms of just being able to use anything you want anytime you want, Say equipping the bow and shooting a few arrows, then equipping your axe as the mob gets close and casting some buffs and heal spells all at the same time?

I looove freedom and unrestrictiveness in games, but I also know balance is needed at times, to keep things challenging, And i hope this game for fills both those needs, of challenge and freedom in one!

And i can't wait to see those critters running about, hehe.

Well i'm still downloading but i'll just have to wait and see! Hopefully i'll get enough out of the newbie island help me understand what the game is all about. I also will probably be asking a lot of questions in-game if there is any activity with members then, unlike most games where you start playing and don't really communicate with anyone for a long time.

you are gonna like this game hehe, probably the mainland more than the isle, as it has more 'character'

not gonna write a long reply as its half time in the footy, but,

1. Everyone strives to know the best crafters and make the best contacts, in and out of guilds. the way crafting is handled makes the factions bond, friendships 80% start with some sort of crafting/gathering of materials basis, its a team effort always to create a good item or a set of armour/jewels.

2. Having multiple skills will boost your overall stats to make all other skill trees easier and make an overall strongeer character, this could be more HP, more dodge, more parry, more sap for enchantments( pre loaded spells on weapons or amps)

The ecomy is stable, there are multiple currencies, much like RL, you`l find very few that make "bugger it, that will do" weapons or armour, everyone strives to make the best to thier ability for thier customers, not just to get quick dapper

Thanks, After 2 days of playing, I'm really starting to see it's potential and am enjoying it very much. I am done all the quests except for a few more gathering and the main guy near the tower. I already subscribed and can't wait to see the mainland, but i don't wanna miss anything so I'm trying to finish all the quests on the island first, knowing i can't come back.

I think i will be here for at least a little while longer :) and hopefully it'll turn out the way I'm hoping and i may stick around for good while longer :)

B.T.W.. I'm sorta jumping between mage and warrior on the island, But I always play ranged in almost every MMORPG I've played, so i plan on going range when I'm on the mainland, even if it's not the best choice, just how I am. Although i will certainly enjoy being able to experiment with others too when I'm bored :) .

Plus the community so far been far greater then 90% of mmorpg's out today.. and even though I've seen some lower level or newbie players who picked up bad habits from other games, i look forward to getting out there on the mainland and playing with mature smart people who are here to have fun and also immerse themselves in the game :)

See you all around :)

This community really does seem to be the best. The thing I enjoy most on Silan is to gather a team and go Kitin hunting in the jungle. I liked it even when I was a very low level in magic. Beware from the Kipestas, though. Unlike the Kipee, they aggro and they hurt ! But still, team hunting is the best.

I'll see you ingame.

Cheers to Ryzom !

I know exactly how you feel there, I'm pretty much the same way. (Not only did I specialize in ranged, but also in the weapon that few amongst the rangers use too)

Some things to keep in mind tho:

You will need to craft your own ammo, otherwise you will have to stick to somebody who is really good at it, and that's never fun, so be sure to train your crafting, and have plenty of skill points ready to spend on ammo plans.

you will also want to be able to dig for ammo materials, so you gotta train well in that too. (when I still had access to the game, I was striving to have all three of those trees at the same level)

but keep in mind when you are getting advice from me, that I often spent hours just wandering aimlessly through atys, and went on weekly pilgrimmages unarmed through the deepest and darkest places in the prime roots, and maxed my dp twice a week.
