I remember there being some threads about this issue in beta, but since I was beta testing using a friend's computer with an Nvidia card, I never needed to read them.
Now that I'm back on my own computer using an ATI Radeon 8500 (which works like a gem for every other game I've played), the game crashes my computer. When it reboots, I get this Windows XP error message:
"The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update."
Unfortunately, I've already updated my video driver and Direct X, so this message doesn't help me. The game goes through login fine until I get to the character screen where it says PLAY. I click that, and then the game load screen comes up, the bar on the bottom of the screen fills, and my machine crashes.
Am I just screwed because Nevrax chose a side in this stupid corporate video card war (ATI vs. Nvidia)? I'd hate to think so, as I am a grad student and can't afford a new video card any time in the forseeable future. As much as I loved this game in beta, it isn't worth spending $100++ more for a new video card.
any hope for ATI video card users?

Hmm I been hearing all this ATI problem stuff as well. I have been playing since beta and never had a problem at all, using my ATI card. Guess I am just lucky.

This guys card is very low end old skool video card, what games have you been playing with that? clearly nothing with high specs that's for sure unless you play lemmins alot. Try running in open gl it may help. Since your on a budget you could get a cheap dx9 card an ati 9200 or nvidia 5200 go very cheap these days.

Actually, I can play every other MMORG that I've tried so far. CoH, AO, DAoC, and SWG all work fine. *shrugs*
Anyway, spent a couple hours trying out all the configurations for this game and uninstalling, reinstalling drivers, etc. Looks like the bottom line is that I wasted $50 + shipping on a game that doesn't run with the basic specs listed on the box. The box says 64M video card, and mine is 128M.
Live and learn, I guess. Hope everyone who gets this game to run has a blast.

Try running the game in "Open GL" mode. Ryzom is using some DirectX calls that the older ATI hardware just puke all over. To "force" OpenGL mode click "Start->All Programs (WinXP)->Ryzom->Configure Ryzom". The from the list of options on the left side (actually closer to the center)of the "Ryzom Configuration" window click "Display". From there you should see a box that's labelled "Driver" that says, "Specify if Ryzom is to be run in OpenGL or Direct3D:" and then three options under that:
-Auto (this is the default setting)
-OpenGL (set it to this if you are having problems running the game on ATI hardware)
-Direct3D (I recommend this if you are using ATI cards from the Radeon 9700 generation or newer).
I hope this helps...

Thanks! I hadn't tried that setting because of the warning message, but it works! It's not perfect, but it lets me play while I find cash for a better card. Yea!
Re: any hope for ATI video card users?
Heh I played all of Beta with my ATI 9800 XT without a problem..just built a new machine with a NVidia 6800 GT Ultra and when I load the game at 1280x1024 it only displays part of the screen like it is windowed so I have to switch to 1024x768 then back to 1280x1024 and then it is fine. I am running the latest drivers also...so not sure they are completely on the Nvidia bandwagon. I think it is just a logo they put up hehe.

I had a similar problem with launching the game initially with my Radeon 9700Pro. However, I corrected the issue by going into my driver settings via "Display Properties->Settings->Advanced" and turning up all of the texture quality settings to "Best Quality" or something like that (not on my home PC atm; I'm at work). After that I set the rest of my driver settings (FSAA, Aniso-Filtering, V-Sync, etc.) to allow the application to control. I haven't had a problem since, and I play at 1600x1200.
Re: any hope for ATI video card users?
Irony. That is the word that best describes my experience with this game. I started this thread about a week ago trying to find a way to play this game with my ATI 85000 video card. After getting flamed for using a card that was "too old" even though it met the specs on the game's box, someone here suggested that I manually switch the settings to OpenGL, which sort of worked.
Unlike the auto or 3D settings, OpenGL allowed me to play the game, but only for short periods of 30-60 mins. before the graphics completely glitched, the screen froze, and I usually was dead when I logged back in.
But I was really liking the game, so I kept playing these short timespans and actually got my character up to 16 fighter/21 magic through patience and the hope that I would get a better video card and be able to play for longer periods.
Well, after a lot of scrounging for cash, I got an Nvidia 5700 LE today. After uninstalling my card and drivers and installing the new card, I now can't get past the login screen in any mode OpenGL, 3D, auto, nothing. OpenGL and auto both give my a C++ game crash message, and the 3D setting gets as far as the login screen, and then the graphics warp, flashing between normal colors and red. I have tried every setting in the configuration and double-checked everything on my system, and nothing works.
So, after trying to play this game and be patient, I have canceled my subscription. I guess I'll have to just play CoH until EQ2, WoW, or some other game that doesn't have MASSIVE graphics incompatibility issues comes out.

Re: any hope for ATI video card users?
Just out of curiosity, what brand of 5700 LE did you get? Was it an eVGA by chance? If so those cards have notoriety for being unstable. I'd recommend BFG, Chainteck, Gainward, or MSI if you can find one.dyriddw wrote:Irony. That is the word that best describes my experience with this game. Another reason this might be happening is you may not have removed all of the old drivers for your old card. If you are running Windows XP (not sure as you didn't say), reboot into safe mode, remove the old card and it's drivers.
Restart the system again to make sure it doesn't see it.
Shut the system down and install the new card.
Start the system in safe mode as administrator.
Install the drivers.
We'd like to think that Windows OS is intelligent enough to know when a new
piece of hardware is installed, and it should completely remove any traces
of the old hardware removed, but unfortunately it doesn't always work that
way
