Permadeath is better in theory than it is in practice.
The idea of a tense, heartbreaking, consequential encounter that alters that shape of the server is a great one. That powerful players can die in a player-driven world is a natural line of thought. It seems fun...

Until months or years of grinding are destroyed. Then people get frustrated quickly and leave. (Not all people of course, there are those who love that sort of thing). Ryzom, in particular, is poorly suited to such a mechanizm. 250 skills, even with cats, can take along time to get...especially 250 crafting skills. Mobs overpower player characters quite significantly, and death is omnipresent (but it is usually pretty painless). In PvP, fights are over quickly; which is fine...just jump up and go again.

It would take a completly different game...something where characters can be powered up relativily quickly so thier death wasn't such a loss...and where something could be passed on from one character to the next, so that not everything was lost with the character. That way the equation that is crucial to all MMOs (time playing = more power) is maintained.

This is a long way of saying "No, I wouldn't, unless I were risking an alt."
With a qualifier...if the game were dying...or I were going to quit the game, then an epic conflict would be a great way to say goodbye.
"And you believe, despite knowing that the rest of the entire physical universe is nothing but a series of physical reactions, just pebbles bouncing down a board. The only object in fifteen billion light years in every direction that can choose rests inside the boney bowl atop your shoulders. Right?"

I hit unsure but like keiko, i thought it would be "elimination from the current event". only if the game were to come to an end and there was absolutely no chance of saving it would I think of killing off Meloner in an epic battle. (And even then, I would have second thoughts, I mean it would spoil everything if he died in the first few seconds of the battle :p )

If mechanical stuff were not an issue; Yes, I would.

So, mechanically: Ugh. Not if I could absolutely avoid it.

RP-wise: Yes, I would. Jez would if the reason were 'right'. There are homins she would risk her life for. And hopefully, in such an event, if she died, it would mean something.

...you know, even in spite of skill building, if Jez were in a situation where her permanent death could save/help/fix someone/something important... I'd do it.

*sighs* I'm such a rp'ing fool.

In fact, I've killed more than three fully developed (years of raising skills) characters in Ultima Online - for storyline and the like. Hard to be resurrected when a demon traps your soul in the depths of a hell-spawn ruin. *cough*

"Hell no" is the first thing that comes to mind.

.... The only way I'd do this, is if the game was set to close down the next day....
