Ryzom is a Role-Playing Game, your RP tag is always on, it's just that we all allow each other a great deal of leeway for ooc slip ups .

I dislike the idea of an RP tag exactly because I fear it would have that effect.

The best way to promote roleplaying is to just approach everyone IC. A lot of the players in Ryzom are not regular roleplayers, but are still happy to RP along a bit with those who are. An RP tag would discourage players from even attempting to strike up an IC conversation with anyone not wearing that tag (which would probably be everyone except for the hardcore RPers). I expect this would not promote roleplaying, but in fact have quite the opposite effect.

The server population isn't binarily divided into roleplayers and non-roleplayers, and I fear forcing such a division would push a lot of the 'semi-RPers' into the non-RP group. For myself, I've been in one of the guilds that was considered 'high-RP' for over a year, but I doubt I would put that tag on. It would just make roleplaying feel forced and less natural to me.

(And now I'm probaby just being pessimistic, but I keep picturing an event with the players present divided into RPers and non-RPers, where every attempt by a non-RPer to say something IC is met with "put your tag on!' and every reply by an RPer to something said by a non-RPer with "turn your tag off!" )

I agree, it is a good idea, but I find it very frustrating when half the players I end up talking to ICily go "Hi XD" because in truth, very few people these days know what roleplaying is about and thanks to the idiots out there and the haters, there are people who just think it's weird and sad and they won't even touch it.

I think an RP tag would be a nice thing to put in personally, though that'd be up to the developers, it's a small thing, but it would make finding roleplayers that much easier I remember on Everquest 1 (when it was good ) and even Everquest 2 which I tried for awhile, there were people with RP tags and they actually roleplayed, it's better than just talking to people and having to sift through the smiley or l33t replies until you find a roleplayer, I don't have anything against l33ts personally mind you, just against the ones who don't respect roleplayers and just go out of there way to attack roleplayers like on World of Warcraft... Yeesh, every time I see that name a shiver goes down my spine heheh.

I must admit, that I see both sides of this argument.
While I tried WoW I came upon this nice Ad-On called RspFlag (for the englisch RPGFlag) wich in essence provided just that.
Naturally Blizzard is donig it´s best not to suppot it, but nevertheless it is used.

On the upside it lets you see who´s RPG and gives you a preferably short description of that persons Charkter.
(With some its half a novel you get, resulting in situations like: "Hey, I´m going to RP with you in about.. 15 minutes, when I´m through reading you "short" description.. *cougcough*)
It´s even got Stages of RP: Like "casual Gamer", "Active in RP", "Active and looking for contact", "Not in the mood, come back later" and "Newbe RPGer, please help me."

On the downside, it realy tempts to disregard those who do not have it as "non RPers", while it is perfectly feasable to assume they simply never heard of this Ad-On and actually want to RP and go about wondering why nobody talks to them... *sigh*

So, an RP Flag here...
It could be a boon, or a bane.. depending on use.

I roleplay always while in game, making concessions when talking to/dealing with nonrpers. But you'll never catch Jez talking about my work schedule or anything from behind the screen in any public chat. The closest I get is the occasional mechnical reference in Universe, and even there I maintain a largely IC persona.

Jeziellia, as a character, would never sit in a pub, has trouble sitting still at all. Always has to be doing...

Though I absolutely think having a place in town to get together is a great idea.

You won't find this problem in Ryzom. If you do, I'd like screenshots, please, because it's some kind of endangered species. (One I'm glad to have not encountered in my entire time on Atys...)

So a good foot to start off on is not the usual 'defensive' one that needs to be taken in many other games. And the "smileys" are all great people so far. I think there's one person who mildly annoyed me once. But that's okay.

You'll find a LOT of nonroleplayers - whether they know what it is or not - do accommodate for our 'strangeness'. Quite a few nonroleplayers will talk to you without referencing RL stuff, etc.

Hey, I have one request as a roleplayer! Don't judge me based on someone else's actions, and I won't judge you by the half dozen jerkface MMO players I've met.

But yes, I agree with your observation. There have been, in many places, roleplayers that tout themselves as 'better than'. If they don't want to play with nonroleplayers or OOCers or whatever we want to call people who don't roleplay, then that's okay, I think. So long as they don't go complaining about the nonroleplayers. We all have a playstyle, and I think this community has done a GREAT job of allowing all our different playstyles to work and live together in relative harmony...

Oh, and as an aside - I think EVERY 'group' of player type, and many individuals are guilty of the "expressing views that make it seem like they look down on _______".
