Ditto.

And here is more text so I can respond.

Oh - I also concur that they are basically stimulant drugs. *whispers* It's how the factions control homins!

All crystals on Atys are some form of crystallized sap, no? The idea of eating crystals actually seems a bit odd to me.... Unless they're like M&Ms and melt in your mouth, going back into sappy form which is then absorbed directly into the homin's sap/blood streams. (We never did conclude whether homins have blood or sap, did we? :) )

You could also imagine that a homin could just absorb a crystal by holding it in their hands and making it magically disappear, the opposite way they can make spell crystals magically appear. But eating them is more fun.

Do we even really need a set way to consume them? It seems much more interesting if it doesn't really matter how they are consumed, as long as they're converted back to sap form and then absorbed by the homin's body. Then we could say the majority of homins choose to eat them because they enjoy the flavor, but some might choose to absorb them magically, some might choose to set them on fire and inhale the fumes, some might choose to rub them into their skin, and then some might be like Jamela, and choose not to use them at all :)

These crystals have an effect right away, so the sap must be able to pass right through the homin's body and directly into their brain. Wouldn't really matter how they're absorbed then, right?

Ooh, critical mass  We're already drilling them up, soon they'll be powering our factories as well!

Come to think of it, those drills supposedly go deep into the core. So apart from a little tekorn branch and cheng root here and there, that must mean the core of Atys is largely made up of crystallized sap. Of a kind that enhances learning experience. Could that be why the kitin in the deeper roots are smarter than the ones on the surface?

And the Kitins from the deep roots in the last invasion had crystals on/with them.

Oh yes, and flowers too.

It seems those flowers are related to the XP crystals. I take it homins eat them as well, and they're also stimulant drugs, just with a slightly different effect. They probably grow on top of the crystal layer and that's where their stimulating effects come from.
