this is a good point... May be jumping falling, flying can be added if there is a technical way! A developper can explain this perhaps.amitst wrote:There is a z axis, otherwise you wouldnt be able to go up hills. Game maps your position in x y z

Flying would make Tp´s ,Mounts and World trek worthless then ,so it would be more bad for ryzom as good
Re: Z Axis - i am really sad
they hacked in a crude approximation to prevent mobs from attacking things above and below them (and i think to restrict spell ranges). however the movement, etc. is all mapped on a x/y plane and the z position extrapolated client-side from map material.
try googling around for the nel engine, there's a bit of material out there that explains how it works.

But, even if they manage the move in x & y, they can calculate other things in tridimensional (Like spells, sound, etc...), so the y exists. Then, it's not impposible, in futere, adapt something.xenofur wrote:they hacked in a crude approximation to prevent mobs from attacking things above and below them (and i think to restrict spell ranges). however the movement, etc. is all mapped on a x/y plane and the z position extrapolated client-side from map material.

well, u are right but, the quesiton is if there is hills and going upwards in the game is it Z AXIS?xzizoux wrote:Flying would make Tp´s ,Mounts and World trek worthless then ,so it would be more bad for ryzom as good
that also doesnt mean everybody will easly get a flying mount! well this is another issue imo. the lack of programming knowladge makes me limited to make myself clear!
Re: Z Axis - i am really sad
Z-axis stuff aside, Ryzom doesn't have a physics engine.

The great majority of Ryzom hills are impossible to climb up or climb down. The "edges" of these Ryzom hills are like impassible vertical walls in most cases, even though they look like hillsides.
In Ryzom I would at least like enough three dimensionality to climb up and down hills, and climb up and down shores and docks, as long as it wasn't carried to an extreme like in SWG. In SWG you could climb up a vertical cliff.
The edges of Ryzom continents should remain impassible -- there is no need to recreate my WoW experience in which a char of mine fell 5,000 feet to her death off the edge of the Night Elf island in WoW!
Thanks,

wrong. these instances are one-time calculation (and in the case of sound even a completely client-side calculation that never touches the server). add a third dimension to movement and you suddenly increase the total cpu load on the server as well as the bandwidth needed to play the game.mithur wrote:But, even if they manage the move in x & y, they can calculate other things in tridimensional (Like spells, sound, etc...), so the y exists. Re: Z Axis - i am really sad
I wanted to reply but xenofur did before me
He is right ^^
NeL uses 3d objects and can move them in all of 3 axes (x, y and z).
That's the collision system (PACS) which is based on 2d heighmaps, but you can decide that your 3d objects doesn't use them in some cases (for those which are curious, you can download the Snowballs source and see how is handled the characters)
mtptarget, another game, uses both NeL and ODE (a physics engine).

Re: Z Axis - i am really sad
Jumping can be a really, really bad thing too.. If you played WoW you'll know what I meen ^-^ Nothing worse then feeling big and strong, flexing your undead muscles one minute and then find yourslef mowed down and over by 3 bunny hopping paladins spamming Lolololol over and over again(whilest hopping away towards their next target) Somehow being able to jump forces some people to repeatedly use it as soon as they need to go somewhere. It took a lil while befor I realised I couldnt jump in Ryzom and my first reaction was "Heh, I cant jump?!" but that quickly went away as a Yubo ran up to me and sniffed on me. I trade jumping for cute curiouse Yubos anyday. If one gets put off by such a thing as no jumping we'd prolly be better off without them coz they just might be Bunny hopping Paladins in disguise. Flying mounts might be nice but do we really need them?
