My questions and concerns..

Post by emulat3 »

This might be a lengthy post.. just a fair warning ;]

I've spent a lot of time hopping around the MMO market. Starting with Asheron's Call years ago and just now ending my subscription with World of Warcraft. In between the two I've tried about every trial out, bought multiple games, downloaded the free ones and all I've been left with is the sudden urge to uninstall them after a few hours ingame.

I found Ryzom a while back and downloaded it. At the time I couldn't afford the subscription but I went ahead and played the trial (the limited time one). This was well over a year and a half ago and a lot of things have changed within the game. I recently reinstalled it and actually sat down and gave it a try and love it now. I really do. The crafting, custom attacks/spells, finding the resources to craft (opposed to say, WoW).

After maxing out everything available in the trial I decided I was going to go ahead and start my subscription. Impressed with the general gameplay, community, Ring is something that really caught my eye, the sounds, mood, everything of the game. But I come to the forums and I find all of these threads of people leaving. Granted someone said most of them were the previous CSRs, but alot of the threads look like regular players, as well.

I find myself stuck because I don't want to commit to a game that's going downhill. Not that Ryzom has ever been huge, but it seems the community is losing a lot of good players due to negative decisions and actions that the development team (or whoever) has brought on themselves. This is the very same reason I didn't re-activate my Asheron's Call trial; I'm unsure of the future of the game.

I know no one here can tell me whether or not the game is going to continue to prosper and expand or whether it's about to go straight down the drain. But I'd like some honest opinions from some of the people planning on staying if the game is still worth coming to now. There could be some people who are only playing for the community, for the people they've met, but as for me, I haven't yet established any bonds with the community and am looking at it only from a gameplay perspective. I find it nearly pointless to jump into a game right before it closes the servers.. it happened to me when I purchased the expansion pack for AC2 and decided to return to the game.

I'd love to be a dedicated Ryzom player. The community seems wonderful and I'm dieing to get to the ML, but like I said, the future (and what I've read) scares me.

Alot more people are staying than are going. I say you should stay and give it a try. Make Atys your new home. I don't think you'll be sorry you did :)

Hi emulat. I'm one of the players that is staying. Yes we've lost a great customer support and some great players and members of the community but there are still alot of great helpfull people in the communty. On top of that I'v played alot of MMOs before coming to Ryzom and none of them were near as good as Ryzom was and still is. The skill system with the editible spells and skills and the depth of the crafting and harvesting systems are still a huge step above other MMOs. Whatever you decide the best of luck to you :)

The game has recently changed ownership.

With new ownership comes change.

With every change, some players will leave, others will stay.

For many of the older players, those who have been here a long time, their main reason for playing is their friends here, the social aspect of the game. When that social aspect changes, as it recently has, some of those older players will no longer feel a desire to play, and when their time here is done, they will move on.

Some of those who are leaving have been around for a long time, and they will be sorely missed. But life on Atys will go on.

There will undoubtedly be changes, but without change comes stagnation.
I choose to believe those changes will be for the best, and although I now mourn the loss of many dear friends, both CSRs and players, I am optimistic about the future.

If you try the game and don't find what you're looking for, then you can always choose to leave. But if you never give it a chance, you will never know what you've missed out on.

I hope to see you on the Mainland soon.

I would also say that the forums are only a small part of the overall population of the server. There are still familiar names about from when I first started playing over 2 years ago.

The Samsara guild, who are leaving, includes several noted homins, but I havn't seen many of them logging in as a group recently. I dare say, that when things settle down, we will see some of the departing homins returning, if only occasionally. The community will live on, and younger faces will replace the old :)

I'm not a two-years player, but I'll be here for a long time; I see that GF will give stability to the game. That makes me more confortable, specially after the Nevrax break.

About the chaos in the forums, is something usual. Most of the outgoing people are people with 2+ years in the game. For most of them isn't only the Jolt change, is some boredom accumulated, the need of something new, it's a lot of issues, not only this.

And the forum, as someone says in an older thread (I think Jyudas), is only a shadow of the IG community. Here could be some excitement and discussion about the matters; but IG the community is the same that always: friendly, helpful, good.

Here, in the forum, all have go emotional. It usually happens. Everyone has his point of view, and everyone post it. Sometimes it goes personal, and what is a little issue, appears to be bigger.

True is that will be a change; a significant quantity of old blood is going, and new blood is coming. I'm pretty sure that this will change things in the surface of Atys, and I think it'll be for good. In a certain way, a lot of the first generation is going and passing to the legends, and a second generation is coming.

That's not bad.

And, last but no least, GF is giving me a good impression. As many have said, the IRC Q&A was something very, very good.

So, really, you can come, we'll be here to welcome you :)

BTW, if you're on Arispotle, don't doubt in contact me for everything

Thanks everyone for actually taking the time to even bother replying.

I just wanted to hear some positive about the game from some actual players instead of reading negative reviews on various sites and the thoughts of the leaving players.

I'm looking forward to seeing you guys ingame soon under the handle Synthetick :)
