That idea is probably why many MMORPG players/communities are so querulous and demanding. They think paying $15 per month entitles them to everything? A few hundred dollars per month doesn't even entitle you to put nails in the wall of your side of a duplex.

A customer is THE income for these markets. Always, and i mean ALWAYS try to satisfy the customer as far as humanly possible.

Well, i have to say i game from a game way worse then all the games descriped here, the game was full of Turks cheatin, botting and hacking everyone around them, that company never, but never restored anything to the legit players there was left in that game.


As far as i can see now, this company is handeling things much more better then any other game i played online, even thou i was impatient and a little pissed off the 1st of januari, now things have calmed down you all can see they defently learned from it.

I actually agree with you, and alot of times i think: what a IDIOT!!
But then i have to take myself in the neck and just become better.

You can't put a lot of batteries in only one room, security issues. If there's a fire, the acid will kill in seconds all people surronding. If there are a lot of batteries, you need several special rooms to make the security standards. It's a hard world.

you probably right. but there is special battery cabinets for datacenters... and there is more than one type of batteries to be used in different things.

hehe, you correct about all that you wrote, but it can be built. also, you need to realize that you dont run generator 24/7. maybe once a year (if you lucky not even that).

ok, i'm sure ryzom servers are in fine datacenter and not just "mom's" basement. and i'm sure there is UPS that can keep servers running for reasonably long time.

.. but (and this is big one), why dont ryzom servers shut themselves down when power goes out ?
surely they can be shut down nicely by script and not just SGM entering /shutdown<ENTER> in chat

Isn't easy put it in a city or in a building not suited for it. The buildings with old central calefaction systems used to be ok, if the central system is not used any more. But, if not, is very hard, because you have to build a lot of things.

It's really not that big a thing outside of a dense urban area. In a suburban area, industrial park, it's "easy as cake, pice of pie" (5 dapper fro movie that quoted from). The UPS can be relatively small....A 20kw is more than enough to keep 12 servers running and I just received three proposals today for one ranging from $13k to $17k....probably spend $25k with installation. The UPS would have to guarantees 5 minutes of running time tops and that's being generous allowing the set to fully warm up before doing any load transfer.

Now of course to pay for that, Ryzom would need 1,667 subscriber-months or 556 peeps to sign up for three months.

Having personally lived with the aftermath of a power spike and UPS failure causing a outage to a large data centre - I really feel for guy in charge of Jolt's data center - he will not be getting much sleep atm.

Let me share with you some of the realities of data center facilities management. For simplicity, i will only cover the power related part only.

Data centres come in many "grades", and essentially you get what you pay for.

A top of the line datacentre, will have redundancy for everything.

For example; power facilities for a 1 Mega Watt data center will include;

* 2x phyiscally separate 1MW transformers supplied from different grid power circuits
* 2x physically separated UPS, each with sufficient battery strings to supply power for 90 mins
* 2x 1 MW generators

All the above will be housed in physically separated, fire proof rooms.

This scenario is refered to N+1 redundancy, and allows for the failure any facility without impacting uptime. This type of facility is extremely resilient / expensive and used for TRUELY critical systems eg. share trading, stock market, telco's etc. It is unlikely that any game company would consider hosting in such an expensive environment.

A more common datacentre power environment will have

1x transformer
1x UPS and battery string - good for 30 mins
1x generator

In this scenario, the failure of any component will put everything hosted in the environment at risk.

In the event of a failure from the electicity grid, both AC and DC powered equipment will revert to the UPS (uninteruptable power supply). UPS/battery string failures are suprisingly common and often only come to light in an power failure event.

You get what you pay for !!!

For a system to be totally immune to data center failure, then ALL components of it (in the case of Ryzom, website, klients & game servers) would need to be deployed in a "high availablity" architechture, REPLICATED to a physically separate site. Not only does this double all infrastructure costs, it also make the application significantly more complex to support and manage. These types of deployments are undertaken by corporates who want to protect their revenue generating services.

I would suggest that Ryzom is certainly not even close to being in that category !!!!!

Jolt's data center staff will be having a very difficult time at the moment. GF/Ryzom will be one of a myriad of customers impacted.

Because "hosting" is their core business, I am very sure that they will be taking resolution of these issues very seriously.
