you probably right. but there is special battery cabinets for datacenters... and there is more than one type of batteries to be used in different things.
A generator big enough to maintain a DC for, lets say, 3 hours, at least in my country, need a lot of permissions, about contamination, smoke checks, fuel deposit, etc...

hehe, you correct about all that you wrote, but it can be built. also, you need to realize that you dont run generator 24/7. maybe once a year (if you lucky not even that).
ok, i'm sure ryzom servers are in fine datacenter and not just "mom's" basement. and i'm sure there is UPS that can keep servers running for reasonably long time.
.. but (and this is big one), why dont ryzom servers shut themselves down when power goes out ?
surely they can be shut down nicely by script and not just SGM entering /shutdown<ENTER> in chat
