Any way, thx indeed Marjo for the info
Tried the tickets was told (not me personaly but the guildie who lost the 250ql lightning mace) that there was nothing they could do to replace lost items......my point being there was no explanation, just no plans to replace the items (again the mushroom syndrome) from reading the forums these loses arent the random odd event many many players have lost hard fought for items with absolutly no explanation and no recompense

AFAIK, the Ups Systems usually are used (At least in DateCenters) to give the Sysops some time for make an ordered shutdown in all servers. The big power consumed by a DataCenter is hardly sustainable by any UPS for more than 5 minutes (And that for a very, very big cluster of UPSs).

I haven't seen any generator in a DataCenter; usually no place for it, hard to get permissions in city (It has to be a BIG generator, with a Big fuel deposit and smoke scapes, etc...), and so on. Usually the datacenters have backup power lines, but with very bad time as now in UK, the Backup lines comes down too (But in regular use it saves from the standard shortages).

Really, there are two plagues for a system administrator: big power shortages and big nerwork shortages. And, as far as it hasn't happened in your work, usually you can't do nothing about it, only take coffe and pray for the provider solve the problem quickly.

Personally I'd expect a a data center to have smart UPSs that shut the system down gracefully, rather than let them crash and become corrupted. They don't have to keep the system up for long, just long enough.

I know of a datacenter that has a generator which (When they remember to re-fuel it!) kicks in if the power fails. and most of the systems in there aren't as 'valuable' as a game server.

I hate to be harsh but what kind of data center can't handle a 30 minute power outage?
This is the kind of think that is keeping me away from the game, I have lost faith in Ryzom. :(

you just need BIG battery ;-) lots of them actually.
ofcourse generator is cheaper and takes less room ;-)

The kind of data center that a small MMORPG developer that eventually ended up in receivership could afford?

Take a good look at these three games:
EI Interactive's Horizons
NGE Star Wars Galaxies
Dark and Light
...then come back here and talk about faith loss again. :)

I'm glad that they at least told us about what was going on this time, and the reasoning behind the crash. I have no loss of faith because I know how hard it is to run things that people need and take care of people's needs and complaints(which is why I no longer do it).

I think people should cut them a bit of slack. Obviously Nevrax itself has been going through hell, if they hadn't been they would never have had to sell to Gameforge. It is not their fault that their UPS or whatever went down, they don't have control over that. It was faulty wiring, i.e. not THEIR fault, obviously its the persons fault who runs the datacenter.

I hate continuously seeing people all up in arms over GF, Jolt, and Nevrax. Give them a break, they've got to deal with the servers staying up, the information on them, and all of us. Thats a lot to deal with, thats the job they have taken on, and its the job their doing, as well as can be expected when there is faulty wiring.

You really don't know the cost of that centers, isn't it? I work for my country goverment (And, I can assure you, there are a lot of money) and some systems are in *that* kind of datacenters. The cost are very, very high, I can assure you.

EDIT: Misunderstanding; i wanna say that all datacenters can handle a 30 mins outage. But not several of them in few hours, what it appears to be what happened. That kind of datacenters are very expensive, that's my point. In six months this has been the first issue of this kind. And today they have handle it very well. So I don't see the point of your sentence.

You can't put a lot of batteries in only one room, security issues. If there's a fire, the acid will kill in seconds all people surronding. If there are a lot of batteries, you need several special rooms to make the security standards. It's a hard world.

A generator big enough to maintain a DC for, lets say, 3 hours, at least in my country, need a lot of permissions, about contamination, smoke checks, fuel deposit, etc... Isn't easy put it in a city or in a building not suited for it. The buildings with old central calefaction systems used to be ok, if the central system is not used any more. But, if not, is very hard, because you have to build a lot of things.

That's true. I think that the problem was when several outages come one after another, without the UPS has their power restored. It has happened to me. The UPS ends empty, and the servers get powered off before they can shut down the third or fourth time. I didn't know if is this what happened to jolt, but IMHO probably is.

You seems to forget that most people pay for this, sofar as I can see most people are very friendly towards GF/Jolt etc..

I don't know *Shakes head* Marjo, I suggest you look to see what Riveit was doing during the time of the fire. He would do anything to prevent SoA from attacking their OP. :p
