First off after reading these forums for a few hours I have to say, the community of this game is as nice, and maybe even nicer, than I was told. Everyone seems very mature. Now, a few questions- I'll number them so that they will be easier to answer.
1. I am a huge pvp type of person. It is one of the main reasons I play mmo's. Now, I know that Ryzom has pvp but what is it like? Fun? Rewarding? Intense? Is it based on the skill of the player or the gear? How exactly does it work?
2. How party based is the game? I've read that your skills will go up faster in a party, but if I am in a "I don't feel like partying mood" can I go solo and still make progress?
3. Finally, why do you enjoy Ryzom? What is it that keeps you playing?

Re: Questions from an upcoming player
Im not a PvP kind of guy, so I cant say wether PvP in Ryzom is fun or not.
As for the solo'ing, its doable, but you'll need alot of downtime, regenerating your stats because the selfheals has a cooldown before next use.
You can combine fighting with foraging, so you'll regain your sap/hp while using up your focus on harvesting, and vise versa. If you dont like digging in the ground, you could explore and find out new ways to dodge/avoid dragging too much aggro, when going from A to B (exploring).
Personally, I have always been a great digging fan, and I like the cozyness and relaxing atmosfere of digging in the ground.
Being in parties is the most fun imo. You'll find plenty of friendly and mature players, who will help you and even run across the region to save you, as long as you are nice towards the community.
What I enjoy about Ryzom?
Atys. The planet 'lives', and I often stop and watches the beatiful sunsets, or the herds of herbivaures being chased by carnivores.
Exploring the lands, finding new areas to hunt/dig and knowing I did it by myself, without anyone telling where to look, or how to get there, is very fulfilling to me.
Seeing a new mob-Boss for the first time, looking at its splendor, and taking part in the player/event-team events is also some of the stuff I spend my ingame time with.
Most of all, the friendship in my guild, and the fun and laughter in guild chat.
I could go on, but I wont.
Hope to see you on the mainland

Hi there!
Regarding your question about PvP, you might want to read this post.
Well and as Razz said, you can solo but don't expect it to be as reliable as in other, streamlined MMOGs. Now this takes us straight to question number 3...
Why? Because Atys lives. The ecosystem is actually living so to speak. Thus you won't find the (other) devs approach of mixing or placing solo and group mobs etc in a rather static (and boring) way. If you ask me, it's downright awesome how everything interacts with you and each other.
Don't get me wrong tho, you'll be able to solo just fine but keep your wits and two eyes open.
That said it is also a prime reason to play. Furthermore the community is the best I ever experienced. Helpful, nice, fun to be around, dedicated and if you are into roleplaying, this could be pretty much heaven.
SoR is not about grinding. It is not about title farming and who-will-be-the-first-to-ding-stupid-level-xyz or who will be the first to get hold of that awesome raid drop (and in the end everyone looks the same and has the same stuff).
Once you get accustomed to Atys, you'll see how sophisticated the whole of it actually is in terms of worldbuild, lore, events, community.
Well that's my point of view as a newbie. I might be wrong at one point but I encourage the vets to correct me if.
Anyway a hearty welcome to you, homin!

Re: Questions from an upcoming player
yup, the post linked above is good, at least in an informative manner..
on a personal opinion, i think pvp in this game is plain crap.
at first, it's quite fun yes, you discover the game, find a guild, go to your first op battles. its all fun.
after you see what's behind all that : old timers grudges, politics, who steal from who, that guild did that ages ago, etc..
there's nothing in this game for the casual pvper. and dont tell me that ganking people in pr is fun...
so the fun passed..pvp is a duty for me now, nothing more, no fun..
come..wipe or not, goodbye....

Re: Questions from an upcoming player
One note on the PvP in SoR, particularly in the group pvp such as OP battles, imo it isn't so much of a "I'm better than that guy so I can beat him then move onto the next one and so on..." affair; its definately group pvp - the skill is in working together, getting the people there in the first place, and organising the group. Your individual skill isn't as much of an issue as that of the group as a whole and its leaders imo.
Dunno if anyone else has been interested by that distinction between pvp in SoR and that in (say) GW and WoW, but there you go.
