A complex world and skill system that requires more than three button presses to master.....yes that is the frustration of Ryzom.
And it is the very reason player interaction is essential.....and this is the real hidden bonus I discovered.
Confusion and frustration will turn to conversation and exploration soon....and before you know it you will be the 'teacher' confusing new folk with talk of 'Stanza' and 'DP' etc....

I welcome both you and your son to Ryzom. :)
Experience is essential.....Wisdom is priceless.

If I am not careful this could end up as the heart-warming story of a father/son team who set off to spend quality time only to encounter frustration and anxiety but endure, encouraged by the helpful community and finally discover redemption on a small island in the middle of the Dew Drops where, after plot twists only slightly less confusing than "Bee Season", they are at last rescued by a rebellious but beautiful Matis played by Uma Thurman, who also offers them some particularly useful training in swordsmanship.

This will be "based on a true story" in that the first part has actually kinda happened and thank you all very much, the second part I have to admit is more what writers call "giving scope to the story". However what actually happened should be noted as well, because I have never seen a MMPORPG where people go so far out of their way to help each other.
Once, upon dying in the Dew Drops, I did a /who and seeing 3 people I decided the best that could be made out of the situation was in the humor of bothering to call for a rez. When what to my wondering eyes should appear but a blue dot, pulled by eight tiny reindeer! Okay that was more scope, actually it was Rebuilder, who had come across me earlier and had a pretty good idea of where I would have died, it was really beyond the call of duty.
As a result of similar examples while in RoS I came to really enjoy the "Cleric Commando vs. the Death Timer" mini-quest even more than I used to enjoy doing corpse retrieval as a Bard in EQ (which really was fun when you could pull off the very unlikely). This last weekend, with so few people on there was little chance, but it remains my favorite thing to do.

Thanks also to Dah for explaining a whole lot about a whole lot I didn't begin to understand and also to Emptyish who was nearly dying to tell us where to find blue materials. No really, he nearly died due to my /tell window opening in what must have been the middle of a fight. And yes, if not for his warning I would have walked right up to those Cutes, I mean they skip for goodness sakes! *That* is pure Evil in game design, well done!

In a nutshell we are sold, though I must say I would be a bit more sold-er if I could just get up on those roots...

Calevin

P.S. please don't tell my wife about Uma and me, for obvious reasons Uma needs to stay in cognito.

welcome to ryzom
the motto seems to me to be what do i want to do today rather than what should i be doing.

there is a definate lvl of determination needed to adjust to life on the mainland but by god its worth it.

Wow, nice. I never in 50 yrs would have expected to see Brownian Motion mentioned in the Forums here. I got a good chuckle out of that for a good 5 minutes. I guess my true nerd colors are starting to shine through. Time to go hide in the corner now... :)

Nope, not a nerd, just someone who knows important topics (even if obscure) that is present in the real world. :D

That is fantastic news. Glad you decided to give Ryzom more time and overcame your reservations.

Some of us old timers often forget that Ryzom isn't easy for anyone, particularly new players. Even with RoS the learning curve on the mainland is steep. However, Ryzom has a great community pf people willing to help. Ask as many questions in the universe channel as you can. Ask in region too. People will happily answer.

Oh and the branches (or canopy) are planned to be accessible One Day (tm). Least they were by Nevrax.....

I understand you, really, I do. When I came new to Aris (Even being more populated) I feel much the same; takes some time for a player figure out what to do and not waste time, not being dissapointed.

But, after all, the choices are easy (Even if noone shows it up to you): Hunt (With sword or magic), harvest and craft. Make your own world. Take your time, and learn how the members of differents guild are (You can set the guild name for others char in Options/interface) and then select one.

Upgrade your weapon and armour frecuently; whit the harvest/craft you can gain a lot of dappers, for buy good weapons or good (Ex/Sup) mats for make your owns.

And an advice that I'd love to have when I was new: Speed Up. It really works. At first level you need to be still running a while when the effect has passed, but it usually works. And in Tryker land you only need to run up to the water.

And the healing self, as high as you can. :)

Well, surely you know al this, but as it takes my time learn all, i put my two pennies. :)

And I really understand you. When I come a few months ago, I not exactly complaint, but give some ideas to make easier the newbies to mainland life, and the Acridiel post was his answer to me and some others players in my line :) . I reccomend you, even when I'm still thinking that the newbies welcoming to ML could be very improved.
