Newbie Dilemma: Do ALL Quests When You Start??

Post by reznick »

It has taken me several passes at new characters to get a feel for how the game works. I am noticing that trying to do everything (fight, magic, harvest, craft) can be daunting, and that although the initial quests help to get you started, I am wondering if it is even necessary to do them all, or just focus on, say, melee and harvesting, ignoring the other quest lines.

Here's the thought. Some of these quest lines require that you purchase skills that you might not purchase under other conditions. Also, by doing "everything", you feel like you need to keep all your skills somewhat evenly levelled. For instance, my magic is now a few levels behind everything else. Should I focus on Magic to raise it up to be more even, or just decide to stick with one battle and one occupation (harvest/craft)?

I know that my sap levels are very low (didn't know to get Intelligence increases earlier on), and this is making magic a problem for me at the moment. Just seems that although you have this nice selection of quests, perhaps it is better to just focus on where you want your character to be in the future, instead of trying to get everything to level 20 or higher before you leave the island.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this....

You certainly don't need to do them all, it will matter very little in the long run.

However, I would highly suggest it. Particularly Magic and Fight and Chiang missions- as they reward with good gear. You'll be much better off moving to the mainland fully equipped and not having to worry about dapper or handouts right away. Gives you some leeway to take your time and get to know some people.

Working skills below lvl 20 will be easier on Silan then on the mainland. And really, there's no reason to avoid working a skill to 20 at minimum. Getting to lvl 20 should go quickly, and if it doesn't you'll probably be much better off continuting to learn the combat on Silan then the harsher mainland.

The harvest missions I can see being the most easily skipped. They are still excellent training, but it requires you to do a lot of things that can be frustrating with the low level skills available to you.

The only skills I would worry the missions in generaly want you to get that you may not want are for the crafting missions. But even then the bonus XP kind of makes up for it.

Oh, and welcome to Ryzom! Look me up in-game anytime if you have more questions.

Doing all 4 quest branches not only gets you some gear (even the harvest and craft quests give you gear with focus bonusses that help with future harvesting and crafting) but also walk you through the process of each of the 4 Arts, and guide you to level 20 in all for the most part. You need fight and magic higher for Chiang's quests that give some nice medium armor.

I have gotten the impression from veteran's posts that almost everyone does a little something from all 4 groups eventually. Range weapons are supported nicely by making your own ammo, for instance. Some quests you might want to do may ask you for diverse actions.

A basic grounding in all 4 disciplines is what Silan is supposed to give you. I did everything the island had to offer in 4 or 5 days, and they were well spent.

I can see experienced Homins skip the craft tutorials easily.
These, to a far lesser degree the harvesting tutorials as well, will require you to spread your skills in crafting by obtaining crafting actions and/or plans one might not have wanted for him/herself initially.

The fight and magic ones, I'd advise to do all. First off because of the equipment which is far better than Homins of that experience would see normally, and within the magic skilltree -if done nicely- it'll even give a bonus of 2 free defensive magic levels else gained only by healing in teams or afflictioning.

Still, as anybody here said already, these are tutorials... You don't want to do them? Don't do them. Most things improve faster on the mainland anyway ;)

Like the rest I'd advise strongly to at least test all the skills to some degree.
However, for survivals sake, I agree with the others, finish the figther and Magic missions and the Chaing missions.
Just do not get too used to missions, the mainland's mission are only for Fame pts in either one of the factions or civilation related. Once you (hopefully) come over your free to do whatever you want to.

Hi im also new to Ryzom, so still on Silan. I intend doing all of the missions i can before going to Mainland. Ryzom is the MMRPG ive been looking for - it is fun and at the same time challenging.
