Ummm - an awful lot of "Old English" as it is used in RPG's comes from the King James Bible - and no one ever spoke like that! :)

(The language in that was deliberately 'sexed up' to sound more authoritative - until it was produced "church speech" was latin).

I'm afraid the "thee" and "thou's" just look a bit sad most of the time, especially in what it more of a futuristic game rather than pure fantasy.

Generally, to RPG, just avoiding the use of references to the "real world" is sufficient in itself, although surprisingly difficult to do without thinking about it ("What on earth...........", etc).

I do remember, in EQ, getting pissed off with someone and letting loose a stream of truely vile invective in middle-English. Had it been phrased in modern English, it would have got me instantly banned. Instead, only a couple of people actually understood what I was saying (and sent me ROFLMAO tells!).

Nah, I disagree with Flynnkd. The only roleplay I've seen on the Arispotle server has been great fun, and more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. I've not heard a single 'yay' or 'verily', not that I'd object.

Hmm what is it about Matis, the the Zori turn up and are not impressed by the matis way of life while when the trykers turned up we did not like the smell of the place or the fact that there were matis there.

The best language i find to roleplay with in Ryzom for a tryker anyway is slang / street English. Easy to do every one understands and they can thing it is either RP or i am like that any way.

BTW anything that i say that does not have numbers and figures on is From my chars POV. even than the numbewers and figures are only used to enable me to converse concepts in game. A bit like a couple of engineers talking sheer factors and material mass etc.

ooh and BTW I never ever intentionaly spell the teh (my tyoing is to qiuck for me to keep up)....

Good point Zella. The RP that I've seen involving Oba and WormBreath has been seriously funny. Can't complain about a really good laugh :)

hmmmmmmmmmm what an odd post,

roleplay is what mmorpgs are about, this type of game is for having fun with friends and making new ones; not complaining that you dont like the way someone else is speaking.

its all in fun, the ye olde english roleplay in matis lands is fun, sometimes it drags on, but who cares its FUN !!

btw, for the 'swearing' bit you should consult the Ryzom players behavious and rules section, rules of conduct etc.

but all in all, roleplay rocks :)

I hate the word "mats". I cringe everytime I see it used.

I'm a keen RPer when I get the chance. But I rarely use "Olde English" even in a fantasy game.

It would be nice if the RP community could develope some sort of pattern of speech for use in Ryzom. One of my characters in AO had a very very distinct way of speaking. I used the 3rd person no matter what I was talking about and drew out a lot of vowels.

I think it got on some people's nerves and sometimes people struggled to understand me so I had to moderate it on occasions. RPing is fine but other people need to understand you so it's fun all round. More importantly I think a lot of people enjoyed the character and I enjoyed playing him.

How about that then you RPers. Develop a way of speaking that might be unique to Atys or even your race.

On another related subject. The only thing that appealed to me about EQ and *cough* EQ2 *cough* was the language feature. Speech bubbles appearing next to characters with a load of incomprehensible chat added a great deal to the experience.

On one occasion I was in a group trying to take down an orc chief and his band. After when had taken down the chiefs bodyguards his shaman ran over to him and had a quick conversation. If we understood what they were saying, I thought, we'de know exactly what they had planned for their final stand ... great stuff.
