It will only cause a bit of a delay. With some help from other homins, your friend can be 'trekked' from his homeland to wherever you would like, and vice versa. Sometimes you can find groups doing treks from one area to another if you ask around locally (region).

There's only one major way it will affect your gameplay, and it should be temporary. After getting off the Island onto the Mainland, you will start in different cities. The only way to get to each other is to cross some very dangerous and hostile terrain. Most players at low level will need some help doing this, though I know a few who have been able to cross the wild lands alone at very low level.

Most people go along on a "Trek", which is where a couple of high level characters who know what they are doing, take the newer player along, showing the safest route and protecting vs. level 200+ hostile things that may try to eat you even on the best route.

The good news is, having done this once, you can get "teleport pacts" at Kami and Karavan altars for each capital city, so you'll never have to do the trek again if you don't want to.

The only other way it could affect things is if he is Zorai or Fyros and you all decide to go to the Karavan faction. He can do it, but he will have to earn a lot more faction than you will, since you start at +10 or something and he starts at -10 or so.
