A person in Universe channel last night said they had been subject to DNS attacks. (spoke as if he was site staff, don't recall the name)

Re: is ballisticmystix.com dead?
The webhost that runs the site is not in my estimation very concerned about their customers. Personally, if it were me, I'd try to find a way to spread the word quickly about 'my sucky webhost' everywhere I could, and provide a link to their site.
The page that comes up most often is 'cannot start application blah blah', this is not the result of a DNS attack, just incompetent system administrators.
Sadly, from looking at the technology used for the site, in my past experience, it wasn't commonly available with all webhosts, so unfortunately BM may be caught between a rock and a hard place.
.
Just trying the site now:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers>nslookup
Default Server: xxx.xyz
Address: xx.xx.xx.xx
> set recurse
> http://www.ballisticmystix.com
Server: xxx.xyz
Address: xx.xx.xx.xx
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: http://www.ballisticmystix.com
Address: 64.34.168.108
It looks like some kind of DNS response is being received, the IP alone gave a 'test page' so either they've rebuilt the server, or the way they setup their virtual hosting, they didn't bother redirecting requests that don't include a 'host' header to their own site (some hosting companies do that on shared servers).
Anyhow, it's down again
It's too bad, not only is it a great resource, I know we'd be lost without somewhere to stick a message when we need to make someone gear or the like in our guild..

From what I've been told by our web admins it's a twofold problem. Firstly the hosting requirements are not very common so they have limited choices. Secondly there have been some DNS issues which resulted in blocking some IPs. As I have no direct control it is frustrating. As Minou noted we are without our guild forums alot.-Kilgoretrout Guild Leader Ballistic Mystix

Is this a website you're paying for? If so, there are certainly plenty of other full featured web hosts out there...
Re: is ballisticmystix.com dead?
I have a question, is the website hosted on a Shared hosting, VPS, or a Dedicated Server? Do say. I may be able to help.killgore wrote:From what I've been told by our web admins it's a twofold problem. Firstly the hosting requirements are not very common so they have limited choices. Hello... Rakujitsu of BallisticMystix.com here...
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Ryzom community for its support for last two years. We are proud of what we have accomplished in our attempt to share with everyone our fascination with the living planet called Atys. It pains us greatly that it appears this chapter has come to an end.
It has become apparent to our fans that our site has become less and less reliable and missing the TLC it once enjoyed. It is a victim of prevailing technology, the "shell games" of commercial web hosting and the diminished dedication of its creators.
The website represented hundreds of hours, thousands of screenshots and gallons of "creative juices" by its core web team.
Oshido - Web Master, Male Model – how he managed to take a server grade app and a SQL database filled with an entire planet full of information and stuffed it into a little JVM session… I don’t know; you’ll have to ask him. His skill and patience with Photoshop is also one of amazement. The Armor Gallery and the Maps of Ayts are truly amazing because of his efforts. Oshido’s talent was recently recognized and is now working within the MMO gaming industry.
Soma – Creative Design, Female Model – much of what you see on the website was influenced by, created by or otherwise blessed by Soma. It didn’t go up unless Soma said it could go up. That resulted in some long nights and heated arguments but her dedication to detail shined through. Soma kept us on track and sane, even at the expense of some of her own.
Rakujitsu – Community Liaison, Editor – How did we get all that info in there?? Raku put it in there! Every mission, map point, everything! He traveled the lands searching for NPCs, mob type, class, level (what’s that?? they changed the star system again!??!). Okay, some exaggeration there. It was a wonderful way for me to experience the world and meet many fellow homins.
But we have been fooling ourselves that we would return one day and regain the enthusiasm and dedication we once had. While the website may fade from cyberspace, BM will live on. It has been a great honor serving you and we are glad we had the opportunity to meet some of you at the London IRL last year.

I have refrained myself from saying "bye" to you in the hopes that you may return one day. As the time goes by, I am considering that this may be less and less likely, as much as you are still somehow present around.dc77066 wrote: But we have been fooling ourselves that we would return one day and regain the enthusiasm and dedication we once had. While Kilgore and company are doing an excellent work keeping the name of BallisticMystix up and around, I cannot but take a deep bow and salute the "dreaded three" Raku & Soma & Oshi, the founders and core of BM. Your effort, passion and love for the game have impressed me from day one, (where I met Raku in Fairhaven after giving some RP to one of Takashi's events). The website is one perfect and fine sample of your contributions, read by several generations of players.
You will be missed and I wish you the best of lucks in your projects.
