Your posting reminds me a lot about how i felt when i started...
took me 30 dig levels do find out what to do to pull better than a ql10 loool
Good thing about it, if you are not one of the guys who can dig into a game and rip every secret out of the game mechanics that the devs hid (and some they dont know about) its still fine... (I certainly ain't). Its your own pace that matters, and due to the brilliant skill system that still doesnt mean, as in so many other MMOs) that you cant team with your buddies any more because they got higher levels than you (that really spoilt AO for me).
You cant make much mistakes in putting xp on the wrong skills, at least nothing that couldnt be fixed later. You are harming no one if you dont fiddle with stanzas and get the last bit of power out of them.
If you notice later that other ppl are getting better heals tho being the same level (just picking an example) just ask them, or any other player, they'll be happy to explain.

This got me to thinking about an online resource for people to share their action recipes... Perhaps people wouldn't necessarily want to share, thinking it might give their PvP enemies an advantage, but just a thougth anyways...martl wrote:You cant make much mistakes in putting xp on the wrong skills, at least nothing that couldnt be fixed later. Re: Can something be too detailed...
They aren't that complex, unlike the craft recipes. Action stanzas are much more about balancing this or that to suit your own playstyle. Everyone grows differently and develops their own tweaks and versions. I am quite sure that almost everyone with Masters in magic and melee - and so identical in stats - has radically differently constructed toolbars and actions, but with all the same ingredientswizaerd wrote:This got me to thinking about an online resource for people to share their action recipes... Re: Can something be too detailed...
I dont quite know where to start answering your question, I played a Warlock in WoW and enjoyed it to a great extent to be honest, its a style of play i lean towards, Phantom Summoner Dark Avenger in L2, Necromancer in CoV and EQ2, so the only thing I would miss from WoW is the pet thing.
regarding what type of magic it is, well I dont know, I'm elemental, so what I use mostly would be elemental spells, Electricity etc. But tbh, I dont know what Shadow Damage is in WoW, but it doesn't keep me awake at night either
Regarding the magic, you didn't state your levels (as far as I noticed), but as a rule of thumb, I would use Acid on furry mobs and Cold on Kipees/cloppers etc, with a bit of Rot on plants.
The animations change at (I think) 85 and become pretty cool, but once you hit 125 (I think) and get the racial spells like Electricity, Poison, Fire etc. You become godlike.
I like the way Stanzas Work, in WoW you get your spells upgraded similar to ryzom, Shadow damage 123456 what ever, but here we use a receipie for their components.
The stanza can be created thusly :
You have a certain power output (debit) and you need to fuel that power (credit), so You want an output of 100 (debit), so you need to be able to come up with 100 credit somewhere.
The usual suspects are, a bit of sap, a bit of HP, a little Time and a little distance. Now you can mix and match these to suit your circumstances, eg use more HP credit, because HP is easier to heal than Sap, or maybe you are also melee, and have more HP to play around with (as in my case).
I never use time in a credit, if I want to hit or heal, I tend to need to do it in a hurry, so that leaves me with HP, Sap and Distance to play with.
Being a mage, well, you need to be as far away from a mob as possible, so I look at the spell stanza and put in as much HP and Sap as I can, then what ever smidgin is left over and I can do nothing else, then I put in distance credit.
Sometimes you will get a spell at a certain level, and not actually be able to cast it for a couple of levels (or in a particular case 15 levels) as you cannot generate enough "fuel" credit to power the spell.
Sometimes its more prudent to "dumb down" (ie, use a lower power level) a spell as the credits can put you in a hazardous situation, you may need to put in a distance and time credit, that will leave the mob stomping on your head before you get the next spell off.
Ideally you should be able to get of about 4 casts to kill a mob, just as they are knocking on your door, so choose a slow moving mob like eg. arma etc. But sometimes even less casts before you are in a melee situation.
so the question, is the game too much for you? I say no. Even I can understand it
You have Power and Fuel, you balance them as you see fit, try not to use time as a credit, this leaves you with only three choices to make and one of them is only a small credit ie. distance.
Elemental is very easy to level up, cast at the maximum distance possible (click target, right click compass and choose Target <mob>, your distance from the mob will appear).
Have a nice stay in Ryzom

Well I've certainly decided to stick it out and give it another go-a-round... Thanx to everyone who's responded. Most of the posts have been extremely informative, and have given me much to ponder. I looked at the Action Video Tutorial, and with the added postings here, and getting a clearer picture of custom actions.
Thanx everyone...

Re: Can something be too detailed...
Just like to respond to the comment about "Magic not feeling like magic"
Ryzom, unlike WoW or EQ or whatever.. is a science fiction setting.. the "magic" is not a gift from the 'gods' or a pact with some netherworld fiend ( ok, debate about the kami continues
), but some form of phenonema (sp ?
) which, although we dont fully know the underlying principles, we have a fair grasp of the rules needed to work with it. It is probably even less 'mystical' than the StarWars Force(tm). offtopic: StarWars is more of a fantasy setting than some sword and sorcery epics
/offtopic
So despite the melee and low tech appearance, the feel of Ryzom is high tech.. or even hypertechnology, as some use to justify the Magic label

Your posting is very detailed, and well written. I think you will have no problems with this game, once it "sinks in", or the "gestalt" is clear, etc.

Re: Can something be too detailed...
Please please please don't make a publically available recipe bank. While it's good for the homins, it's very bad for gameplay. Ryzom.raum.com and ballisticmystix.com have got it just right, you can get a hunch what to dig for but it ain't giving away secret recipes.
And welcome Wizaerd, I think you will feel very much at home. WoW is really great at the low levels, it's very easy to get started. Ryzom is harder, but once you finished the boot camp you will know how to play, the rest is just details. Some really nice details too.
In WoW and NWN your build is very important, not so much here. You will never make a permanent error so your character feel flawed, because character building doesn't happen at the trainer - but when you edit your actions.
