I have a few questions about PvP that I would greatly appreciate answered.
1) First, is it possible to be part of a guild that is faction aligned, without being aligned myself? Or will that automatically cause my chara to become aligned with the faction of that guild?
2) If aligned, must I always take part in PvP? Will I be forever flagged, forever hunted by anyone of the other faction?
I'm basically asking because I'm part of a guild that might take part in OP, and I would like to be an active and participating member of such events if they are in good faith...yet I have no desire to take part in PvP on a personal level.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

1/ Yes you can be neutral in a factioned guild.
2/ No, Global PvP tags are on/off switches, however areas of atys are GvG and you will be tagged automatically after a timer.
3/ With outpost, you pick a side for that battle, even members of the same guild can be on different sides. The OP battle is area specific around the contested OP.
Hope that helps.
Re: Question about PvP
Thank you, it does indeed.
Re: Question about PvP
Neun pretty much covered answers to your questions but I wanted to add a little. Basically, none of the faction/PvP choices are forced on you. Even in some of the areas that are desinated as PvP zones (e.g. parts of the Prime Roots). - you can always choose to leave the area before the timer flags you as attackable.
Faction alignment is a conscious choice. You have to actually make yourself Kami/Karavan aligned by doing a rite. The same is true of civilisation alignment. Your choice is limited, however, by your fame. If you have negative Karavan fame, for example, you can't do the Karavan rite - mainly because you can't get near the temple! You have to sort your fame out first.
The PvP flag (in areas that are not designated as PvP) has to actually be turned on/off by you. It isn't automatic. You can choose to make yourself attackable or not.
When you approach an outpost that is about to be fought over, you are prompted to choose a side (attacker, defender or neutral). These 'sides' are not faction related (though I expect this thread will soon suggest otherwise :rolleyes , you're choosing which guild you want to fight for (or not to fight at all if you choose neutral).

Re: Question about PvP
there are other (newer) forms of PvP, been here since release but they are becoming more and more important.
FPvFP: Forum Poster vs Forum Poster: it's basically a 1on1 battle although several times you get alliances on one side or people defending one of the posters. It does not use weapons or spells, but it is damaging nontheless, and it has all the "characteristic" aspects of classical PvP: ego-boosting, condescending behavior, strong arguments and the eventual name-calling. In all aspects, it reduces to the same thing: to prove that I am better, I am right or I pwned you.
RvR: Ringer vs Ringer: this one seems pretty new... With the weird idea of motivating players to use the ring to create scenarios, there will be new systems to class and rank ring scenarios and scenario creators.
