Yet Another new member with a few can/cant questions

Post by matic77 »

Hello all new here ... Downloading the game as i type this message out. I am pretty excited about playing after reading through the forums. I love the open endedness (if thats even a word) sound of this game. I come from EQ2 and I am just so darn tired of gear or the grind being the only meaning for my existence.

So i guess my questions are

1) as a new player i heard Cho is a good server to start with ... is this pretty much true?
2) how customizable as far as skills are characters. I always envisioned my character a burly hulking guy with a large hammer and little/light armor ... is something like this possible (not that i'd be disappointed if its not) just trying to gauge how customizable characters are.
3) pvp community - how is it here, and before going any further I am not one of those "omg d00d i just pwned your face LAWL" types. but i do enjoy healthy PVP every once in a while.
4) small group combat - reason i ask is because if i enjoy it i might be able to talk 3 others into playing hehe. just wondering how is group combat. Is it the usual Tank/Healer/DPS set up or is it more involved.

thanks hopefully i will see you all in game :)

Welcome Matic77

1) I would start on Cho if I was new. The server is about 3 weeks old and while the population might not be like Arispotle, most people are still pretty lowlevel.
2) Big mace and medium armor would be a nice melee damage giver.
3) I haven't been PVPing much (almost nothing), but I don't think there are many "pwn"-types at all.
4) Ok, they may join. ;) The Tank/Healer/DPS work, but because everyone can heal and rez the roles tend to be a bit more mixed up than ordinary mmos. The damage giver, "nuker" (offensive magician) can heal the healer very easy and vice versa.

Welcome to Atys!

As for the questions...

1) Server selection is really a personal preference. Cho is very new and young, it hasn't quite beene stablished yet, bit of a frontier land. Most players there will be lower lvls yet. Arispotle is old and well established, full population in all ranges, masters around of most any skill.

2) You could certainly do the character you're describing. Heavy armor is usually high priority for a tank, but if you play a secondary tank role you could easily get away with less. Specifically, I know of some Zorai medium armor that would fit tat image well, and medium is good protection. We don't have hammers exactly, but I imagine a big 2-handed mace could fill in?

3) I personally think the PVP here is pretty good, but it's a very secondary activity to the rest of the world. At any given moment, PvP most likely isn't happening, but there are occasional faction vd faction fights for fun, as well as the famed outpost battles.

4) Small groups are some of the most efficient leveling groups. With four people you have countless different setups you could use while hunting. Everyone can do any skill, so you'll continually get to shift positions around and play different roles. Tank/healer/nuker is the simplest combination, but you're far from limited to that. Half the fun is figuring out what you can hunt with the skills you want to use :)

Hope that answers it well enough for you! Feel free to look me up in game anytime to chat, just /tell sehraci Or /tell sehraci(arispotle) If you decide to play on Cho.

Enjoy your stay!

1) Yes, plenty of low levels on Cho now.

2) Customize skills all you want. Sorry no hammers, but you could use a really big mace to bonk things. Tanking in light armor will get you killed solo and make you unpopular with healers. If there is a tank in the group, you can bonk away wearing as little as your modesty will let you. Saves on armor wear. If you aren't set on a guy character, you could wear medium armor and look half naked.

3) Probably plenty of PvP at higher levels for you, but not enough for dedicated PvP'ers.

4) This is a great game for small groups. For grinding, 3-4 homin teams are close to ideal. Tank/Healer/DPS are the basic roles, but plenty of variations on this that you won't find in other game since everyone can use multiple skills. 2-3 melee work since they can heal each other after the fight. Afflictions are very useful, but less common since they aren't necessary.

As Sehraci mentioned, even a male character can wear Zoraï medium and look half-naked. :p

1) Your server choice is better left to your gamestyle preferences. While Cho is a new server it may be at least half (total guestimation, read the forums for a feel of what I mean) veteran players that either wanted a new start or found the politics of Aristolple not to their liking. You will find many new folks on Arispotle as well, seems we have added more new folks recently than in a long time and our guild doesn't actively recruit. I can only wonder how many join the guilds that toss an invite to anyone not guild tagged they see.

2) Your weapons scale to your body type, your weapon won't loom larger so to speak. It will look biggest on a Zorai, smallest on a Tryker. Your overall look will make you unique or not, most regular player know others by look before the name appears.

3) pvp community or community pvp ? The most common PvP is done in the forums and nobody wins. IG as stated early you either have to know if/when/where it is happening or stumble on it (unless you make your own). How healhy THAT pvp is, is probably relative to the outcome :P

4) Small groups are the bread and butter of leveling... you can solo but it requires a vast knowledge of the enemy and is slower overall.

Good questions, but no response beats your wandering around and observing... enjoy yourself.

I'd like to add that on top of what has been said before me, you can choose a different server for each of the five avatars that go with your account.

well so far (obviously very early) I am enjoying myself. I love the fact that i can do what i want .... No more of "you're a tank ... you can't do anything else besides that".

I got my big hammer/mace and some medium armor on me with some nice HP mods and im doing fairly well. died once .. kept missing lol comes with the territory of wielding a slower big weapon.

havent had a chance to group up yet just trying to learn the basics before i screw up a group lol.

spent a lot of time trying to find these mobs for a quest ... then looked on my map and saw the area i was supposed to go to there and felt stupid lol.

thumbs up so far :)

About the missing...

... when offered, as soon as you can (after upgrading health, etc, which should always be top priority when available), try getting the Accuracy stanzas. Then add them (whenever possible) to all your attack skills. This will help a lot vs. the enemies "dodging" you and such...
