OK, I see the need for a level cap ...
...people staying on the island for months and grinding out up into the 50s in melee and magic on smaller mobs and into the 60s in forage off q45 mats and getting close to 100 in craft using the NPC q50 mats...
they need to be encouraged to move to the ML rather than stay there forever and become UberNoobs
BUT!
a cap of 21 is ridiculous !!!
I have been on the starter isle, and you can't finish all the quests if you have a level 21 cap! 21 just gets you into the first part of learning the game and its mechanics.
Why have the jungle area with lvl 35-40 mobs and q45 mats if no one can kill or dig them?
A level cap of 40 would accomplish the same objective of moving people on, but would also not frustrate the heck out of them and make them leave early.
Heck the old starter island was a place where even in a week you could get far above 21!
Why have unlimited time, but then let people only get to a level that will be reached in a couple days.
Bad move - hope it is changed - and FAST - before we lose a lot of those people that have been breathing some new life into the community on Atys

Me too.. see http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showpost.php ... stcount=34triprech wrote:OK, I see the need for a level cap ...
that's not the problem....they are doing at their own free will.... the real problem is that when they are doing so, they are consuming system resources and bandwidth... at no cost for them....people staying on the island for months and grinding out up into the 50s in melee and magic on smaller mobs and into the 60s in forage off q45 mats and getting close to 100 in craft using the NPC q50 mats...
it's still open to discussion I guessa cap of 21 is ridiculous !!!
oh, but to get past that lvl 21 cap is easy...oh wait... you have to payI have been on the starter isle, and you can't finish all the quests if you have a level 21 cap!
Yes... and isn't that enough?21 just gets you into the first part of learning the game and its mechanics.
By the way, for me "learning and evaluating the game" is different from "finishing all the quests"... Some quests can be a good way to learn the game, but not all quests teach you something new...
Sure, there are people who can.. those who paid a fee of around 12 Euros, and haven't moved to Mainland. Why have the jungle area with lvl 35-40 mobs and q45 mats if no one can kill or dig them?
then maybe you already knew the basics of the game to decide whether you want to play it or not.... and assuming that "wanting to play it" implies "paying for it".Heck the old starter island was a place where even in a week you could get far above 21!

Whether the level cap increases the number of *paying* customers or simply reduces the load on server so those "paying" can have a better experience that remains to be seen. Whether it is an overall better strategy too.
What seems clear to me, is that there are a set of freeriders, that are using system resources, that consider Ryzom a "completely free game until I get around lvl 50 or so in all 4 branches....You can even pay one month, which is less than the typical price of a "box" and decide for yourself.
Interesting point. Some (if not all) of these may indeed be part of the community (nothing should change if they don't care about xp and levels) , but some may just be enjoying a free game. Whether those that have no intention to become subscribers and join the mainland are breathing some new life in the community, I have my doubts.... at most, indirectly, if they manage to convince other players to *do* become subscreibers and join the community at the mainland.before we lose a lot of those people that have been breathing some new life into the community on Atys

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
cap is only inplace for trial players. those who will subscribe, can get xp past lvl 21triprech wrote:a cap of 21 is ridiculous !!!
level 21 in current tutorial missions (they not quests, they tutorials), is to fast to beat because of massive amount of xp given for a reward (no patch info on that one, so i assume xp reward is still there). therefore new players also have no real feeling of the game.21 just gets you into the first part of learning the game and its mechanics.
like i said, limits are only in place for trial players. lvl 21 is start of the new branch, so good choice. it's still unlimited time trial. its still possible to learn how game works and you still are able to get first basic skills.Bad move - hope it is changed - and FAST - before we lose a lot of those people that have been breathing some new life into the community on Atys
Re: Level cap on Starter Island
This is my experience.
I was on the lsland and i played alot there. At first, i played it just to check it out and learn what ryzom was about. After getting better and better, i liked it so much that i decided to pay.
Something i never intended to do !
If you limit the cap to 21, people mis alot of fun. Fun in fighting, mining, and crafting and very importantly PvP-ing. LvL 21 is too low imo, if it wouldve been the case one month ago i would not have subscribed.

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
Yeah you're right a level cap of 21 is riduluous for such high mats/mobs, I say reduce the levels of mats/mobs NOW DAMMIT!
On a more serious note, Neverax are having some financial problems, there is light at the end of the tunnel and we want to get to the other side of that light.
For every post you get here dissing Ryzom, there are at least 100 rebuttals.
If you read the forums, you will realise the strength of community present.
When we tell you its a great game, we are serious, we aren't just fanbois chucking some propaganda rote crap at you.
I left and tried all the major MMO's currently available, they dont hold candle to Ryzom for Graphics/content/Lore etc.
The community alone is worth the price of admission for chrissake!
The level caps of mats and mobs were allocated when silan was devised as a replacement for the original starter area (which IMO was more straight forward than Silan BTW), so now there is a disparity between level cap and mob/mats, big deal!
Take my/other peoples word for it, the game is great, if by level 21 you cannot ascertain that, then take a punt on it, 15 bucks, FFS! its 2-3 beers and you get a month of FULL CONTENT to make your mind up.
If you dont like it after your free Play and 15 bucks, well the world isn't going to end if you go to some vacuous game like WoW or EQ2, evidently Ryzom isn't for you.
But these whingin "i've lost my free lunch" posts are a waste of everybodys time, get a flavour of the game for nowt, read the forums/fora (for the pedantic among you) and make an informed decision YOURSELF!
Its cheaper than taking a 50 buck punt on another game, if you dont like it, then go elsewhere, its your loss, if you cannot divine the quality of Ryzom, the community can only go so far in illuminating you on its qualities, if you dont "get it" fine, but dont start a whingin git post about it, it does the poster/the game/the community a great dis-service.

Trialers are causing a strain, so I'm glad Nevrax have done something about it.
A trial is a demo, not a free game.

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
So limit the time, not the levels.
If they had limited the levels, I'd have stopped at 21 in all skills after a week or so and probably uninstalled.
I think this is a bad move. I'm not saying this because I think it "violates player rights", or to "stick up for newbs", but because I think it's a foolish move that will lower the # of people who go from trial to paying accounts, and will hurt Nevrax even more in the long run... and dammit I want this game to succeed.
I understand they are in financial straits and that the trial-ers are putting a strain on the system. The easy way to solve this is a time limit... give people 30 days and then lock their trial account. That's plenty of time, and it does not prevent them from seeing higher level stuff. For example, harvesting is miserable in the lower levels and I didn't think I'd ever become a harvester. But then I got into the higher levels on the island and fell in love with it, and harvesting is now my highest skill.
Again... if the trial had not let me get to 50 or so, I'd not be here, and I'd not be paying them a cent. And again, I'm not trying to "defend the freeloaders" or anything like that... I want to see Nevrax succeed, because I love Ryzom and what they are doing with it... and I honestly think this is going to harm them. Big time.

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
Sorry, but most people know if they're gonna pay within a couple days of playing, week at most.
You wanna see more, pay the cheap price of a one month sub. Then you can even get off of Silan and see the world.

Re: Level cap on Starter Island
What part of the word "most" means everyone?
And I'd hardly call a casual player a freeloader since casual implies casual. And casual players is exactly the reason why the trial shouldn't be limited in time, only lvl.
