My biggest concern with the level cap is the same as many others. Level 21 seems to be too low as a cap for Silan.... (I noticed they bumped the cap from 19 to 21 in the patch notes)

The answer most people get when they ask when they should move to the mainland usually involves getting their attack skills up to 40 (30 as a minimum) which would obviously not be possible with the level 21 cap...

The other issue is the Kitin/Kirosta missions.... Even with a full group of level 21s, is it not going to be a tad difficult to take down those level 35, 40, and 50(boss) mobs..?(especially the Kirosta..) Or is that section being retooled to take the level 21 cap into account?

Once you pay you can still level higher, on the island also, you don't have to move across straight away.

If I have that right.

Short answer: lvl 21 is not a Silan cap.

Let me chime in... there seems to be a confusion about the cap (in general, not you). The cap is a means from Nevrax to put some pressure on free-riders, and nothing changes from a pure gameplay aspect -for paying accounts-. I understand a bit Nevrax move (still unsure about the effect tho, whether a) it will affect negatively to potential customers, b) new subscreibers will come at the same rate, but it will release some of the resources used by freeriders or c) there will be an increase on freeriders paying an account). In other words, this cap is a pure economical aspect. A paying account is not affected whatsoever. It is not that Ruins of Silan is limited to level 21. Trial accounts are restricted to Silan, but paying accounts are not forced to move to mainland.

Silan = Starter Island
Silan != Free play / Trial

No, it will be the same. What changes is that to enjoy the Kirosta mission, you have to contribute back by means of a paying account (if you consider that you must be lvl 30 to try) or do it as lvl 21.

It is true that the "unlimited trial" is now misleading. It is true that you may not be able to complete everything *if you don't pay* ... but the truth is, from what I gathered while visiting RoS, that there is a number of players that play the trial not as a means of testing the game whether it fits you or not, but as a means to play a free game -- it's ok, they are in their right to do so -- but using system resources, etc.

Without time limit, without xp limit, without level limit.... a player can play Ryzom at 0 cost for ... weeks, months? although it becomes impractical at some point.

A similar call needs to be made regarding "open betas": you need open betas to finish a game, you need open betas to give some publicity to the game, but too long open betas can have a negative effect, since players see higher aspects of the game and get tired of it, thus not subscribing (and this happened to Ryzom too, the initial XP-per-action disaster and lvl 250 in couple of weeks)

edit: Jy posted faster :P

Exactly, you explained very well the issues. Basically, RoS became a mini-game inside the game, what is obviously not the intent, and what uses lots of our resources for free. A solution to limit this was to add a level cap.

We think that gaining 21 levels (or rather 21x4) is enough to understand the basics of the game. It's indeed possible to reach this level very fast, but a cap at 30 wouldn't really address the issue either. If you follow the tutorials for several skills and explore RoS, having 21 levels to work on is enough to spend several hours on the starter island, meet other players, and then decide whether to subscribe or not.

And yes, it doesn't allow you to finish all the missions. This will be one of the differences between a Free Trial and a subscriber on Ruins of Silan.

Ah... makes sense... one would have to subscribe to finish all of the missions if they so choose. And extra bonus to subscribing. :)

Yep, it always surprises me to see how much a little difference in expressing the very same fact can change... ;)

I think people are forgetting the point of a free trial. It's not to allow one to play all aspects of a game. It's not to allow them to get to any level. The purpose of a trial is to let players see what a game is all about for free.

With Ryzom you can play through the first 21 levels of all skill trees for free. That gives you more than a good idea if you like the game or not. So if you want to see what happens after that point you need to pay.

My question to those saying the level 21 cap is too low, what part of the game mechanics don't you experience in that time that you need to go to a higher level?

To be honest, getting to level 21 is so easy that it can be done in a day or less as has been pointed out. I don't think I had experienced having to team up to finish a mission, or really gotten a good feel for the game by the time I reached level 21 with my first toon in the free trial. In fact, I would say I was much closer to the 30-35 range before I expereinced a number of those aspects. By level 21 I was starting to feel a feel for the game, but I had not yet decided, and I am not sure if I would have subscribed if I had been 'cut off' at level 21... Especially in the middle of a quest cycle.
