If you are beloved of Maduk, you have one range of kami controlled possibilities to which to be reborn. If you follow Jena, you have a completly different range of Karavan controlled points. If their skills were not neccisary in the proccess, why are they, or thier machines, always involved?
They're not.
The swirling portals, natural nexi dotted around Atys, also serve as points of resurrection pointing to at least a third source, perhaps the very one that the K's are manipulating.

OOC: (I totally forgot about those. Damnit! Kinda blows my theory, dunit? I think they are a neccisary game mechanic more than they are a lore based phenomena...but I could be wrong. To clarify: I think the only reason the portals exists at all is to provide a loading point for the game engine, not really to teleport us to a distant section of Atys. If the engine could handle us simply walking into the fyros desert from the Hidden Source, for example, I don't think we would need the portals. The same reason we have spawn points at the portals. The game engine requires that we respawn in the same land we died, and it is very possible to die right after crossing a portal, so for technical reasons, we have to be able to start over there.

Yet and still, they exist in game. Most of them have a higher power presence attached to them, but there are a couple I can think of that don't. An 'official' lore explanation of them would be nice, but it would probably be the same weak thinking that came up with the "No minerals on Atys" line.)

OOC:
They do exist mechanically, but they are also there. My IC theory is now that the K's tap into this natural energy of Atys to power their reincarnations somehow, which is why they're often present in such places.

We use what we have to explain it the same way we use the nanoseed to explain the communications things.

I think the 'no minerals' is a mistranslation or poor translation. There are no minerals - in rock form - but they must still exist in all the living matter. Though, really, all you need for life is C,H,O,N and a few trace elements. One of my theories is that Atys is built from cometary or ring system fragments which have everything you need. Gas giants are also GREAT power sources due to their massive electromagnetic fields. Our 'sun' could in fact be a satellite or preceeding moon with some sort of fusion plant delivering heat and light to Atys, making up for whatever bright star is our actual sun...

Just thoughts :)

The portals are of the factions, the write up of the 'New way' on the road map says the origin of the fyros/zorai portal opening event. (late jan '05 http://www.ryzom.com/development/roadmap)

That's still open for interpretation and doesn't explain the other portals otherwise.

"Using their newly found technology, the Karavan decides to open a portal between Zora and Fyros. The kitin, not wanting the homins to become too strong, decide to block the portals and raid nearby towns."

Is what it actually says.

New found? So what of the older ones? Perhaps all they did was uncover and existing portal (using drilling technology to clear the rubble).

Maybe all they did was blast a hole through the root wall that separated the two lands, and the swirling vortex is still just a game mechanic.

(I need a better explanation than just game mechanics for the portals IC)

As we all know there are tunnels one can go through, but the portals have unique powers. They seem to be a vortex of energy. And while I can run into one, that doesn't mean I get caught in the vortex every time. And if I do get caught in one it invariably whisks me to another that seem permanently linked to it.
But they also hold some far-reaching power, as they can drag me in whenever my conscious mind is lost. As to how that functions I cannot say, maybe my subconscious is linked to Atys in ways I don't yet fully understand.
