No powerlevel option?

Post by xasher »

I've played alot of morpg's in the past and found the same thing annoying about just about every one, Powerleveling. Now I know there is a place for powerleveling, and alot of my friends are powergamers, I just want to point out what I see as why most of the people who are complaining about Ryzom are having issue with. No powerlevelling.

I have friends who buy a pay to play morpg and along with thier purchase they buy a hint book...which tells them exactly what powers to take what spells to develop when to fart etc...then they start powerlevelling, and then 2 weeks later they have reached the max level in the game. They become all powerful accept when they look around them every player at their same level is a carbon copy of their character. What do they get out of it...bragging rights....you meet up with them and they are all glowing and full of tales of how their character is umteen thousand level.

Heres how I see it...in Ryzom there is no such thing...so far anyhow. No one path will take you directly to superiority, at least none that was found so far. Thats the beauty of the game, theres no blue print that tells you what direction on the advancement tree is best. You have to kinda feel your way thru the different possibilities in hopes of finding that magical combination that makes your character more powerful then the guy next to you. Then to throw a zinger into the mix...that character next to you might have created or bought a powerful weapon which tips the scales in his favor even tho your skills are better then his. In my book this is the making of a great game.

I'm bored, I give up, this game sucks...2 weeks into the game and thats what were hearing. You know who's saying this....Powergamers....how do I know this...because in two weeks the only person who would be bored with a game would be either 1. spending an immense amount of time playing the game. or 2. someone who expected to reach higher levels in the game in a much shorter time then they've spent on the game so far. Rather then complaining about the fact they can't powerlevel, most complain about the bugs in the game.

I don't know how many people remember this but when EQ started the game was completely unplayable for the first 2 weeks. DAOC spent 3 months shutting down the servers every 4 hours or so to keep the servers running. All the morpg i've been on had issues the first few weeks. Ryzom's issues by comparison are minor at worst.

I'm not trying to start a brush fire in this forum or anything of the sort...I understand the thrill the powergamers get from powerlevelling, but its nice to find a game in which I can take my time, develop a character thru complex skill development that reveals itself to me as I level up. Will there be a book that reveals the ultimate way to create a Ryzom character? I'm sure there will be. Will it cover all aspects of character development....not likely...it seems the skill tree in Ryzom may just have too many possible twists in it to keep people guessing. That is why I like Ryzom.

When you look at a character standing across from you and say to yourself...should I duel this guy...you know longer only need to look at the color of his name, as it is in most morpg, to figure out if you can take him. 250 levels...thousands of ways to develop your character up to that 250 level, watch out powergamers youll grow old before you get there. For the rest of us, enjoy being a unique character in a world completely alien to reality where you can grow, develop relationships with other characters without the shadow of whether you are a better fighter or magic user than the guy your fighting along side of.

My characters name online is Torreg...ill be going into the main world in Ryzom real soon...if you see him say "hi". Chances are i'll sit with ya and we can share tales of battles fought and crafts created. Oh and don't worry I won't ask you your level.

See you online

Rah!
Nice post.
The world is so rich, the powergamers get lost in it. :)

Well said Xasher. A good game will be fun and interesting regardless of level. Good people are a huge part of good games. So far, this game is a good, fun game :) .

I fear you are right that this post will be flamed soon. They will tell you how with the right spells and whatnot they got to level 120 in 37 minutes and have a billion credits getting there. Blah blah blah.

I for one enjoyed this post, and agree with what you are saying. I have been playing this game for over 5 months now and am still excited by it. Most games bore me by now, but this one is so unique there is always something new.

OK support given so tell us how we are simpleminded for not being ultra mega uber blitz bombing ninja power players. BUT please be level 250 before you tell us that.

Naw the correct bragging is: "I went to mainland at first level and started killing Baying <fill-in-the-blank> as soon as I got there, they were too easy, this game is boring."

Power gamers are already doing quite well in the game. They are already level 150-200 players out there.

There is a patch on the test server, in many areas, it is set up to slow down character progression. That is fine I suppose, except that, those that powerlevel always manage to get through all the nerfs before they hit. It's almost a ticket to powerlevel. Those that don't, and take their time, are punished time and tiem again for taking their time. They get the biger grind.

The same has been true in every game i've played. They power their way through the game, and leave a legacy of waste behind them. Their very actions often change the entire pupose of the game.

The thing is, the powerleveler only(mostly) hurt themselves in a game like this, the world itself is a fair chunk of the experience, if you rush past everything, you rob yourself of half the fun.
