Have opinions and things changed?

Come in, pull up a chair, let's discuss all things Ryzom-related.

Would Kami extremist RP be welcome in Ryzom now?

Yes! Ryzom has gotten to tame. Lets kill the Karavan!

I don't care, just as long as your RP doesn't get near my gameplay.

Have opinions and things changed?

Post by raynes »

Before you think "oh here he goes again", just read what I have to say. lol

Long ago during my first 9 months of playing Ryzom, I was heavy into RP. I played a Kami fanatic who pretty much beleived you should follow the Kami or die. I worked with other players to put together events where I would kill Karavan guild leaders. I organized events where a group of Kami aligned players would go to each of the Karavan bandit camps in Witherings (only got to antikami and goo heads) and kill them. I would go into neighboring lands and yell stuff like "death to all Karavan beleivers" in chat. There was one player event where a zorai was marrying a matis and I went onto chat and annouced that he was a traitor and should have his mask ripped from his face.

You can read about most of them if you search the forums. Well after awhile I just gave up and quit because of the lack of responce and the backlash I was getting from quite a few players. There was a huge overall "we are neutral, so we are exempt from rp" attitude. Some even going so far as to tell me I should keep my rp to certain areas of the game. I got fed up and deleted my character.

Now this was before OP's. It was really just as pvp was being introduced to the game. There certainly wasn't the emphasis on the Kami vs. Karavan fight that there is now.

So here we are a year later. I have to build up my character again to get access to ring items. As I am working on it, I can't help wonder if things have changed or if they are the same. Should I bother to design a charater that is made for playing like I did once? Or would it receive the same negative reaction it once did?

So I post the question to you... Would the type of gameplay I loved be welcome in Ryzom? Would events like campaigns to rid Witherings of Karavan bandits go over well? Or would there still be a huge negative backlash?

I've never felt that RP has ever been discouraged in Ryzom. Indeed I recommend it on its welcoming atmosphere to RP so I'm wondering if the problem was in how you approached it rather than in the community itself.

If anything I feel the community, while still being the most welcoming game to RP on the market, has suffered in that regard since its earlier beginning. Some of this has been due to the attrition of RP/Community based players due to EP2 and outposts but hopefully some will come back due to R2. There has also been some behind-the-scenes changes in the lore to try and push people into picking a side, the nerfing of neutral teleports and so forth.

Previously, perhaps, due to the lore and the nature of the playerbase your fanatic would have been unwelcome _IC_ since the interpretation that so many of us had was that the game seemed to be more about emerging from the disaster of the great swarming and rebuilding homin society, rather than pointless infighting. You may find the current atmosphere more welcoming _IC_ to a fanatic now than it was then.

That said, you have to balance your own RP needs with respect for others and doing things like interrupting an IC wedding with grandstanding may well still get frowned upon. There's certainly enough Karavan fanatics being played out there, maybe you're better off asking Doubletap or someone how they get on with it.

And none of your options really fit where I stand on this :/

Ryzom's gotten less tame, but I view that as a pity.
RP of all kinds is good, but extremists seem to carry it OOC to the forums, which is bad.
RP _is_ my gameplay, but some people have very strange ideas of what constitutes RP.
And it CAN be an excuse for acting like a mong.

In simple terms, I'd dare to say that no matter how you RP-justify your actions, how you explain them both in lore / gameplay / RP terms or how you want to play your character within game and CoC limits... if your actions (negatively) affect other players or at least they perceive it that way, directly or indirectly, yes they'll be upset and in that sense things have not changed much.

In other words, OP battles and "tagged" players define like a "scope" in which certain actions are tolerated/expected/wanted. Other than that, the community has not completely changed. And the forums do not always reflect what happens IG. The same "old manners" seem to apply.. killing afk tagged players, actively hunting diggers in roots, etc. it's still pretty much frowned upon.

There is no simple answer to your question. As long as your actions do not affect a majority of players that simply do not enjoy them or "could not care less " what you do, it's ok. Other than that, others may welcome them, including myself :) it adds spice to game, and had you not been in a different timezone in windermeer, I would have tried to actively participate in it.

I should make it clear I didn't actually go to the wedding spot. I simply said something over regional chat.

Roleplay and Griefing are two seperate ways of interacting with others. When you talk with someone they will respond, based partly on the way you present yourself....partly through their desire to roleplay...and partly through their past experience with people.

Ryzom is a world of fantasy where we mix with PvP gamers, casual gamers, RP gamers, levelling gamers, etc....

your example of the wedding shows that the people were roleplaying....but this is an event that has been well planned and I assume they were wary of your tone because they did not know if you were Griefing or genuine Roleplaying a fanatic.

Don't change the way you play...but also don't expect everyone to participate where and when you dictate. :)

edit - and welcome back :D

From what I have read in the forums as of late is that RP is very welcome and wanted! So I'd say go ahead with your plans but please keep your RP in good taste I.E. the part where you said you went to a Zorai and Matis wedding and called the Zorai a traitor and wanted his/her mask ripped off was a bit over the top IMO especially if you didn't know either of the blessed couple to ok this first. Mugendo put it very well about the rp and greifing part.

LOL there is a huge misunderstanding on the wedding bit. It wasn't a zorai player marrying a matis player. It was a zorai player marrying a matis npc. And the zorai player even said afterwards that he didn't think what I was doing was an issue. It was the other people in region chat, who really had nothing to do with the event.

That's where the attitude question comes into play.

Also just to make it clear I never hunted harvesters LOL. I did kill one harvester but he provoked me. He was a high level player, a master of pain. So it's not like I killed a weak player or anything.

I am all for RP in Ryzom. Personally, I think I suck at it. Although, I'm sure Zahan can tell you I have been getting better at it.

I voted that Kami RP is good, but not extremist, simply because I've been on the recieving end of the Karavan Extremist "RP." For someone that doesn't RP, sorry, but it feels downright mean.

One doesn't have to insult a specific person or guild, to pick the faction as a whole, I can possibly agree on. "The (insert faction) will bring nothing but pain to our Atys." That I can work with. "You stupid (insert faction) hoe." That..well, that I can't agree on.

Get what I mean?

While reading this, I can't help but recall a wonderful wedding of two of my guildmates where you were accusing various guests of being "war criminals", Grimjim. Was that properly balanced? :)
