Vista RC1 / Ryzom Tech thread
Vista RC1 is now available for public beta consumption.
WARNING - Do Not use for your production equipment.
Vista is a very cool update/upgrade from WXP with nice eye candy.
Initial Test Config for Vista without Ryzom:
Asus P4P800D, 2.8 GHz P4, 1 Gig Ram, 36 G 10k RPM WD Sata 1 Drive, NVidia 64 Meg MX400 (AGP)
All driver base Vista Install, other than it wouldn't find the onboard NIC, so that driver was pulled of the MB insttal kit (WXP) After install and connectivity established all avilable patches and upgrades were pulled and deployed
Results - Vista ran fine as a base OS with this config, No fancy Aero but Aero Basic was available.
Config change to run Ryzom: Replace Videa card with an NVidea FX 5200 Ultra 128 Meg.
Ryzom installs fine (other than the annoying user protection stuff - this can be disabled - see ZD Net) Using older install kit and pulling patches.
Initial load of ryzom got to config and 1st load attempt of game fails do to no direct x support in Vista base install of NVidea Driver.
Pulled current Nvidea driver kit for proper OS from Nvidea and installed. Game started to the point of pulling 224 meg patches.
Ryzom Client fails during patch dl (we are pulling a fresh copy of Ryzom as this is being posted) This is likely do, in part, to the user protection initiative. Patches appear to be pulled in but all of it never makes it as evrytime the client is started it wants to pull the patches again.
It's likely that the user protection stuff is preventing it from being properly incorporated and based upon the below info proper permissions arn't available, though once it appeared to make it through all 224 meg of the patches.
After seemingly pulling the patches properly it presents the license screen at which point ryzom crashes with the following:
****************** Beginning of Crash Dump ***************

**************** End of Crash Dump ***************
Have tried the compatability wizard to set ryzom to run as if under WXP (sp2) turned off last 2 items regarding Vista display issues, and set ryzom client to run as administrator and patches came in fine, though the user protection still wanted to know, when the client is started, if it should be alllowed to run at all. (Annoying as this is you can't have it both ways - protection and unfettered freedom are opposing concepts)
Regardless of settings (for compatability and any avialable in Ryzom config screens and intial client log in screens, ie low vs medium, normal, etc: Ryzom client crashes, after log in, endless patch pull loop on restart, after accepting license.
2nd test set will be to pull fresh full copy of Ryzom (hopefully all patches are incorporated) and turn off all User protections (per ZD Net's step by step instructions).
Once this second test bed is setup, another report will be posted here as a seperate message in this thread. Should the second test fail, we will try to upgrade the AGP card to a 256M card and then the onboard ram to 2 Gig.
Another round of tests will likely be presented in the future using Core 2 technology, which after the first of the year and into June of 07 should be mainstream on store shelves in the US.
Remember, RC1, in essence, is the Ultimate version and still very much beta, stable in many ways, but, stilll beta.
We understand fully the system Vista/Ryzom is being tested on, is toward the bottom of what Ryzom might run on, even with WXP, however, we run Ryzom flawlessly using this card on an even older Asus P4B533e MB with a 2.0 P4 and 1 Gig of ram on it.

Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
The char select screen is when the gfx go into full effect. The launch and intermediary screens are not the same level of effect. Hence why you crash at that point. The 5200 was not exactly the peppiest card around when it came out, let alone now. Forcing the thing to run Aero shell and then Ryzom is asking way too much from it. My wife's laptop has a P4 3.4 GHz and an FX 5700 with 128 MB and I wouldn't even think of trying Vista on it, let alone running a high end game like Ryzom on top of Aero shell.
Plus you have too little RAM to run Vista and Ryzom even remotely well. Ryzom will use 800 MB of RAM if allowed to (that is with full gfx and in Fairhaven) on an ATI Radeon 9800 XT. Which is not even up to par for running Aero very well according to Vista compatibility.

Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
Oddly, I hardly have a good comp but Ryzom is one of the few games I have no problems with whatsoever in Vista. The only advice I would give you is to ensure you have a seperate install of SoR because of permissions.

Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
Vguerin - We have turned off all UAC and have done a fresh reinstall of Ryzom. We have also made certain all permissions on the Ryzom client are set to full control.
1. What is your hardware config your running on. Specifically what MoBo/CPU/Ram/Video Card model and Ram (AGP/PCIe).
2. Did you turn off UAC before the install, if not UAC would have controlled the installation. If not what steps did you take to install it and change permissions for Ryzom after the install. (my first crash dump report [pre UAC disable] showed permissions errors the second crash dump after a fresh install does not show permission errors [post UAC disable] - Other than "Access Violation exception generated at 0x695D7586, thread attempts to read at <NULL>.
The thread attempted to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.
the writing to virtual memory space")
3. Are you running Vista RC1 or some previous beta, and what do you mean by "a seperate install of Ryzom (SoR)".
**********************************************
Zerlin - Thanks for the input.
A. After my last crash post we put 2 Gig ram in the box and the results are the same.
B. We have Ryzom running under WinXP Pro on an Asus P4B533, 2.0 Ghz P4, 1 Gig ram with the same 5200 Ultra Card.
C. I've just tested Ryzom on the same system mentioned in "B" above, substituting an Nvidia MX 440 with 64 meg ram, which was the video card used during the initial Vista install, though certainly inadequate for Aero (other than Aero basic) and Ryzom loads fine and amazingly once it settled down runs at least acceptably.
**********************************************
I appreciate all the input, it was my intention to get some insight into this for both the Ryzom Devs/Support/GMs/User community.
Certainly this is an early attempt, pre-release of Vista, to get the game many of us are border line manic over; running under the next MS OS. In the interest of that I saved my attempt until Vista RC1 and its open public beta.
Vista is at least glitzier than WXP with very cool eye candy (IMHO); any technical improvements remain to be seen; however, regardless this OS will be unleashed on us, and at some very quick point the Retailers won't sell anything off the shelf that doesn't have Vista on it.
I have been in IT since 1986, our anticipation is that within apx. 6 mos of Vista's official release this will likely be the case; and no I'm not an MS FanBoy.
I, and anyone else trying to do this now and after Vista is released, would very much appreciate those that have been sucessful doing this to please post the basics on what hardware they are running on (please see my question to vguerin for more info on his hardware), which version of Vista, and how Ryzom was implimented under Vista, ie UAC disabled or not and what permissions they changed and where, Aero disabled or not.
I'm not attempting to push Vista, but as a practical reality when an RC1 is available; the train is almost at the station.
From the standpoint of what drives this train, doing this at Vista's RC1 should help the Ryzom community by the time Vista is released, and though the final release may break it again, we will have had a jump start on if it ever worked, if so what hardware and techniques have worked for others to get it working.
Until Vguerin's post I didn't know anyone had gotten it working yet, so once he adds info as to what hardware he's running on and how he did it, I may also be able to get it running and so might others also wishing to do so.
Case in point, if he's running a $100 video card and everything else is apx the same generation, I might be inclined to buy the Vid Card he's running. If it still works for him and not for me then we have something to hone in on that might get it working for me. Because there may be out of pocket expense to do so, please, only those that can afford such an adventure should undertake it.
It should also help to establish a likely minimum baseline for a successful implementation of Ryzom, post Vista Release.

Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
Nothing fancy here, a Compaq that was cheap with some of my old components thrown in and 1.5G of RAM. I only run Vista (system in dual boot mode) on Sundays to update and test things out until more of my toys work in Vista, that's all I use it for.
As stated in first post, I had a working copy of SoR I copied into another folder for my Vista install. This way any permissions set from Vista will not interfere with my XP version. Since SoR is not heavily dependant on the registry for settings it's the easiest way to do it.OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Ok but:vguerin wrote:Nothing fancy here, a Compaq that was cheap with some of my old components thrown in and 1.5G of RAM. I only run Vista (system in dual boot mode) on Sundays to update and test things out until more of my toys work in Vista, that's all I use it for.
What vid card is in it, or is it built in onboard?
and.
Which version of Vista, since the report shows it's WXP Home, is it RC1?
and..
How did you set permissions?
and...
Did you somehow turn off Aero Standard and set video to say classic?
Also, the first difference I see is that this is an AMD CPU, it shouldn't matter but you never know, and a google search of the model shows it, amazingly, may even be a semperon?!?.
It's very cool it runs, problem is how or what have you done differently than I am in installing it to get it to run.
Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
Only problem I had was Open GL crash message.
Ran the configurator and changed from auto to Directx.... all seems fine now

Re: Vista RC1 - Ryzom Test Bed Feedback Thread
the MX 400 card has no vertex and pixel shaders .... maybe you could try logging in with that turned off and see .

Ryzom works just fine here in vista (with aero glass enabled)...
