It MAY be helpful, yes, but you don't get everything your way. It simply is a help channel, but newbies may not know help to what? And since its shard wide, they called it Universe, giving it more insight to who it was. Otherwise I bet they'd think it was a direct line to GMs.
So read the pop up, it explains everything very clearly, and thats it.
Thats my insight on the issue, backing up Andarr.

We reeeeeally need a universal CHAT channel in my opinion... if only for the sake of our GMs' (purported) sanity

I don't! There are a hundred other ways for people to chat on the internet - I'd prefer people on Atys to BE on Atys and pay attention to the world they have joined, pay attention to Around channel so that when I try to interact I get more than a glassy eyed stare. Don't get me wrong, I have been guilty I know of being focused elsewhere myself, and I have regretted it every time when I realised it.

The minute anyone types in the region chat, they are no longer on Atys.jamela wrote:I don't! Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
A universe chat channel would be even worse than turning the game into nothing but pvp, I couldn't even begin to tell you how it would be a breeding ground for the inbreds of the internet. Hell look at /u sometimes and imagine it a billion times worse...
Yes I know I could turn it off but just knowing its there, cheapening my game and existance would bother me enough.

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
Kind of sad really, when people can't seem to read the pop-up that explains what Universe is for.
I think "Universe" explains it nicely since it's the entire area, and not just region, etc... and the pop-up, if the little script-kiddies would read it, does the job.
Sadly they don't. They're too busy trying to prove how cool they are by talking about how they were in beta or their WoW character until they get muted.
Personally, and sadly, I've given up on trying to help folks in Universe. I enjoyed it for a while, I enjoy helping folks, but I'm really tired of the twits that can't seem to read a pop-up box before they close it.

Either I play different times, am on a different server, or you are seeing something I don't. I have to see major problems in the universe channel. Then again I don't see a problem discussion lore in game and was told it belonged on the forums.johntf wrote:A universe chat channel would be even worse than turning the game into nothing but pvp, I couldn't even begin to tell you how it would be a breeding ground for the inbreds of the internet. Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I disagree with this, region chat doesn't break the immersion, it's more like yelling/shouting around.raynes wrote:The minute anyone types in the region chat, they are no longer on Atys.
On another hand having Help, market & blah blah(universal) channel would be cool, you can always switch any off

Raynes.. after talking in Universe chat alot, you can see a good(and positive) trend.
The GMs don't step in to disrupt brief chatter until it is interfering with someone answering a question... i.e. question is asked and more than a few lines of chatter before its answered. That is the trend I have seen lately.
On the otherhand, there is a gross excess of newbs who try to help and end up spreading misinformation... which is far worse than the idle chatter.
I totally agree with you that the general public should refrain from shushing others unless there is something blatantly innappropriate going on in there.
Also, I have never seen faction bashing shushed in Universe chat by someone important(GM/reknowned).
