Newbie tips from a newbie

Post by gallatin »

Hi everyone! I played Ryzom in open beta but haven't played since. A podcast on Virginworlds got me to check out the game again, and I'm having a lot of fun!

I'm an old mmorpg'r, actually started online gaming with text MUD's back in the early 90's. EQ, DAoC, SWG, and WoW have taken up most of my mmog time since '99.

Since starting Ryzom last week, there are a couple of things I've encountered that might help new players.

First, I'll link a tip with an apology. The tip is, aggro doesn't work like it does in WoW! It's more EQ-style...in other words, you can get a fellow Ryzom homin killed by running angry mobs over their head. I found out the hard way last night when my Tryker (name's Travyl) got someone killed. I'm going to get the name wrong, but it was like Shinshue? I saw him/her medding as I was fleeing the looters in the Ruins, and I had enough time to think "Oh no....are they going to aggro to her?" before they peeled off and killed her quick. I was *horrified*, and I'm very grateful that Shinshue accepted my apology :)

So, if you're running away from angry monsters, steer clear of people resting up!

The other tip that helped me was on step #4 of the Harvesting quest line. I was having a devil of a time finding Fine Zun Amber. My 50m Deposit Tracking would point me to a location, but prospecting the location revealed no resource that I could extract.

Thanks to the many helpful people who tried to explain Deposit Tracking, how to either back up a little or turn a little...unfortunately, none of those suggestions worked. It wasn't until someone pointed me to the right area of the map (below the 'E' in Embassy on the map screen, just outside of town) that I was able gather the Fine Zun Amber. I enjoy harvesting a lot (I miss being an Architect in SWG!), and I was seriously bummed that I was stuck on that step. It took two nights before I got the right answer, maybe I can pass on the assistance here.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in-game!

I see that question about the fine Zun Amber asked a lot in chat when I'm logged in, plus I got stuck there too.

And I learned about the aggro thing from the other end of the stick, you might say. Someone went flying past me in the Silan ruins, obviously on the run from something. I was digging in the area and WHAM! I'm dead. I was seriously wtf?! Checking my log, I saw I had been hit three times, once each, by Goo Head Looters that I hadn't even seen. I don't remember who it was, but they sent me a tell as well, apologizing. It was no big deal, but it was a lesson learned. Now when I run, I try very hard to steer clear of anyone I see, though it's hard when you don't notice them till the last minute and you turn away too late. That happened to me also, and the best I could do was type "Run!" (I was in auto-run mode, so typing a warning was not a problem).

Really can't think of anything interesting to say.

hehe good to hear the 'avoiding homin when certain death is hot on your heels' thoughts are going on :D

If you are certain you are gonna die and you are careful you can drop dead at a respectable distance from said homins and ask sweetly for a res. just need to be very sure you aren't too close and the nasty things eating you see them, and of course hope they arent afk, asleep, etc :)

knowing where to die, or at least where not to, is a worthwhile skill to learn.

Rushin, absolutely, I'll choose death next time instead of draggin' my aggro over an innocent victim. Death isn't a big deal at this level, if you bring it on yourself :)

I've mostly been playing WoW for the last couple years. I can't remember the last time I trained someone, it had to be either in DAoC or all the way back in Everquest....jeez, I remember some of the EQ trains that came out of the basement of Unrest, or Mistmoore, or someone dragging Sand Giants to the zone line in Southern Ro, killing everyone who was afk at the zone-in point. Ouch :)

I feel like I'm at a TA meeting. "Hi, I'm Travyl, and I haven't trained anyone in...2 days!". Hopefully I'll be clean for a long time!
