THEN WHY ISN'T IT CALLED HELP? I mean seriously. How long did it take them to create the little popup that explains its for help? How long did it take to write the text that explains the purpose? Now how long would it take to name the chat tab "HELP"? I don't get it.
A few other things I would like to know.
If someone says something in chat that isn't help. Then someone says "this chat is for help only, please take it elsewhere" (and they aren't a GM), aren't they just as wrong as the person who said something in the first place? After all "this chat is for help only, please take it elsewhere" certainly is not help.
Also explain this:
Person 1: "Kami Bless You! Not Jena though, she is a witch! (in responce to someone typing a sneeze"
Person 2: "this chat is for help only, please take it elsewhere"
Person 1: "What difference does it make no one has said anything for 2 hours in here"
Person 2: "The rules are that this chat is for help only, please follow the rules."
Don't the rules say that if you have a problem with a player you report them to a GM, not take matters in your own hands and police things yourself? And if that is the case isn't rather hypocritical for someone to tell another player to stop talking in the chat room instead of reporting them to a GM?
And yes this happened to me tonight and it annoys the heck out of me. Not because I shouldn't have said anything in the chat, but because people seem to think their policing the chat is any different than someone typing in it.
If Universe chat is for help only....
Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I've personally asked people to stop with continued spam of the board never just one or two amusing comments but long discussions that get into them, and theaten to drag me into them when the comments become so stupid I can't bear it lol.
I think the point is if the players can control ourselves and each other a little it saves the gm's an awful lot of effort, they simply do not have the time or manpower to sit and read universe 24 hours a day like most of us. And lets be fair we all get told at one point or another by someone to stop the spam it happens we all get a little distracted or go too far on occasion and a polite reminder from someone else can help us see that.
However sometimes I have noticed some people who never say anything of value in universe never give any help seem to like just showing up to tell people to be quiet which I've always found strange and a bit annoying but mneh just ignore them and try not to argue about it un universe.
I've basicly given up on the chat though there are too many idiots and attention seekers in it now for me to want to bother or care about helping in it anymore.
And no it's no hipocritical to ask someone to stop as usually they are carrying on a long conversaiton in it, and your just saying one or two lines "asking" not demanding them to stop. I do think a little leeway is important I don't think people jumping on someone after one little jokey comment is good. And it's been shown through their actions the gms place enough trust in us to control ourselves or not go too far before they have to say anything. And I think its a lot better for the fact that gms don't have to get involved and the issue's can sort themselves out.

By informing people they are using the wrong channel, you are being helpful
more helpful would be to direct them towards the appropriate channel, of course.
But I do agree with raynes, calling it Help would certainly reinforce its function.

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I agree in part with both of you. Yes we should police ourselves to some extent and only escalate it to a GM if it gets out of hand.
However, people who immiediately jump in saying "this channel is for help only" when you have only said one thing need to get a life. Yes ask spammers to stop. Jumping in straight away puts you in the same category as the "this is the wrong forum" lot. Forum rules prevent me explaining which category that is.

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I stopped using U-chat a long time ago, after I was muted when I was having a problem and they didn't mute anyone else(I was actually talking less then about 80% of the people that day). So I got mad and turned it off completely user tab and all, haven't read it in months. And never will

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
Agree with Raynes, tabbed correctly would be nice. Homins help policing the channel is good to, especially those that continue to talk about other games and tell people to go try it if they don't know what they are talking about. This infuriates me greatly, I did not buy yearly subs to listen to a conversation about another game. I would not mind if the discussion was about the boss hunt last night, I might get some useful information. But another game, and I did very politely say, " Please end discussion about that game. "
And I did have those single line policing, telling me to revert to Q&A. When there were only 3 of us on U-chat, and a senior guide we were talking to. They are just as bad as I am so shouldn't say anything unless warranted. Like those nasty long spammers about other games and such, that keeps going on and on.
Oh well, we will see.

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I think the little window that pops up pretty much says it all.
I've had questions i have asked left unanswered due to the scrolling conversations about SWG and WoW in the Universe channel. It's frustrating for new players trying to ask questions to see them scroll off the screen with wookies and dwarves.
I guess what's sad, is that nobody should have to remind people what the channel is for.

Then again, why not just call it help?rothimar wrote:I think the little window that pops up pretty much says it all.

Re: If Universe chat is for help only....
I suppose the dev team didn't think people would nit-pick over it. Personally, the little nag-window was enough for me to understand what the channel was for.
I don't care what they call it. They could call it "Cheese Danish", but so long as that little window pops up to explain what it's for... the title is just fluff.

The devs do not at all times account for people having less intelligence than a loaf of bread and flat out refusing to read guidelines and rules on things. That is why they did not do it.raynes wrote:Then again, why not just call it help?
I agree though that it might be helpful to do this change.
