HORRIBLE performance

Post by epshot »

Hi I've recently downloaded the trial to check out what ryzom is all about. I've heard so many good things about it.
I downloaded, patched and played thinking my PC could handle the game at "Normal" Settings. I was dead wrong.
Even with everything to the lowest, and 1024x768 resolution the game seems to drag my PC to a hault.
My specs are:
AMD Athlon64 @ 2.5ghz
1024mb DDR ram
Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb gddr3 using nVidias latest 91.47 drivers
Soundblaster audigy
80gb 7200rpm 7ms

I also checked my ping and packetloss to the server, it being Average of 390 ping with 0 packetloss.
What could explain such terrible (10-20 FPS) framerates?
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hmm, I think there is nothing wrong with the hardware that could cause the trouble. Try to get to Klients and talk directly to the CSR team. You get the client here

Just so you know, I have the same system specs and get a minimum of 40 fps in the game.
Try windowed mode
try opengl

If you have a Dell or some funky name brand then their might be some antivirus doing crazy things to you

Last resort, revert to nvidia 77.xx drivers and see how that changes things,

i actually use the current drivers, but some of the drivers in the 80s were messing up shadows and causing minor issues

Your resolution shouldnt really affect performance at all unless you are somehow in software rendering mode

I ran Ryzom, albeit at min graphics settings, on a 1 GHz machine with 512 RAM and a 128 MB GeForce 4 card when my better machine was on the fritz and it was entirely playable. So this seems like you have other stuff going on besides pure hardware issues. Your setup is high enough that it's above the max Ryzom can even do. Heck when I had to swap my GeForce 4 into my high end system while I was waiting for XFX to test and replace my 7800, I could play it with everything maxed out (1 GB RAM, 3.2 GHz Intel system, so very similar to yours), and performance was as smooth as silk.

I know it's frustrating when you are having performance issues and other people say "I'm not!" -- and I am not trying to say that I don't believe that you are. I had the opposite problem in COV myself, where my friends got smooth performance and I got lots of chop. Almost always it's one damn setting somewhere in the game or even the OS that is doing it (in COV it was # of particles -- they all had theirs long since turned way down and I had mine at the default, way too high, setting, but it took me weeks to realize that was the problem).

Of course finding what is causing the problem is annoying, but I just wanted to state emphatically that it is not generically Ryzom itself -- of all the MMORPGs I've played, including one I am beta testing right now (can't say for NDA reasons), Ryzom is the best on performance (better than SWG by far, better than COV by a great deal and COH by a little, better than GW slightly). It's not the massive resource hog that most other MMORPGs are... provided you don't have some settings issue. The good news is, this means you should be able to get the performance improved if we can figure out the culprit.

The bad news is, it might take a while to figure out the culprit.

Same problem as Epshot. My hardware is all at or above the "Better Specs" on the recommended hardware sticky found here on the Tech support board. I can barely use my mouse from the lag and fps is down even when all the settings are turned all the way down.

Is there any normal fixes for this? I can run other MMO with just about maxed settings but am bogged down while playing on newb island.

For the mouse, try turning on hardware mouse. It should smooth that up a lot.

Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you. I have played Ryzom on old and new machines, with old and new graphics cards, with lots and not so much RAM, and never had a problem with it. FPS has always been solid, lag minimal or nonexistent, performance better than any other MMORPG I play. Since I've never had the problem you describe, and thus never had to fix it, I can't make any other suggestions.

Shortcut for the hardware mouse is shift+F9, this will command will toggle between the game and the hardware mouse.

You can also check in your Game configuration window, under Inputs and Mouse to see what you are currently using.

We have found that with the latest sets of nVidia drivers that Direct3D works a lot better than OpenGL.

Run the external game configuration from the launcher and choose 'Display' and then 'Direct3D' then 'apply' and 'play'
