A New Computer

Hm, I wasn't quite sure if this should go here, but it sorta is Ryzom-related.
I'm getting a laptop for college (so no more desktop computer for a bit). Now, I have to get a Dell Computer, and I live in America (if that matters to whatever).

I was wondering what type of things I should get in my computer for it to do well in running Ryzom. I heard that laptops usually have some trouble with Ryzom, and I dont want that. Granted, I will have to use the laptop for school things too, but it will mostly be good for Ryzom. Any suggestions on the type of computer parts I should have in it? I know you computer genius' can help me. Thankies ahead of time. (and if this isn't in the right thread, just yell at me later )

I say it will need a decent graphics card. Most people that have difficulties playing Ryzom on notebooks have intel onboard chip sets. Check section 8 on [FAQ] Machine Specs and what kind of performance to expect for some details.

My notebook has a 256MB Geforce 6600 Go, and that one works fine, when I switch back to the onboard graphics I can't run Ryzom anymore.

And consider an additional 'normal' keyboard to use while playing. I need the bigger cursor keys and the numpad.

Memory, if possible 1 GB or more, and try to get a fast HDD.

The gfx card should be decent but doesn't have to be state of the art; going from a Geforce FX5900 128mb to a Geforce 6800XT 256 got me little improvement in performance. That said onboard video: just no good.

Onboard audio: not too hot realtek audio chips that are commonly used for onboard sound use a quite a lot of cpu. Now I know there are some mobos (for PC at least) that use Creative for their onboard sound which would be better.

Its possible to buy laptop RAM. so if you see a laptop thats very nice but lacking in RAM then that might be an option

RAM is easy to put into a laptop (usally a flap on the bottom and its quite simply a plug that you put your RAM in and to find out what type of RAM u need visit this site)

You will want at least 1Gb, if possible 2Gb of good DDR RAM. At least a 64 bit AMD processor or above, with a decent GHz, or the equiv in Intel.
At least a 256Mb Gra Card, I prefer the AMD myself, with at least the x800 series+ with the latest OFFICIAL drivers.
A good Hard drive with a decent speed, make sure you have plenty of space on it, if a hard drive is full it can slow down a system considerably.
Motherboards I am no expert on, I have an ASUS, and they are generally a good brand to go for, so you may want to look them up.
Oh and triple check that you get a CPU (Power Unit) that has enough Watts to power all your components, a common problem with new computers is a lack of power.

that would give a nice notebook, and if such a device would have been available for a good price I had buyed that instead of the one I actually bout last year.

The limitations in Keikos are the laptop formfactor and that it has to be build by Dell.

from the dell website the XPS M1710 is probably the best you can buy but it also has a rather lare price tag.

or there is the Inspiron 9400 series that should run ryzom with the right customisation and is quite a bit cheaper.

To me the best laptop would be Alienware. I have one and it is very nice, just cost me $3,200 USD. It will handle Ryzom and much more w/ no issue.
