A questing system which offers unique rewards or rewards competitive with those achieved by player-organised or group-inspired activity does not function in a sandbox game where a high level of intereaction is the life blood of gameplay.
By no means should a quest based reward replace player crafted items. That is the great failing of most quest based games. There is no reason that I can think of, however, to remove all aspects of questing from a game because some people won't do them.

I plan on working the encyclopedia missions as often as possible, because I find the lore interesting. I would love to see the encyclopedia line continued and expanded.

I personally would not want to see missions/quests begin popping up that would replace player crafted equipment or player dug materials. There are other ways to reward players for completing a quest.

But... personally... as long as they don't start removing things from the game, I'm currently happy.

I haven't heard anyone clamouring for uber items.
My last time through Silan found more people that were glad that there were no such thing in SoR.

The typcial rewards for rites would be sufficient; some additional stanzas, a small focus boost, a new pattern, that wort of thing.

The only object in fifteen billion light years in every direction that can choose rests inside the boney bowl atop your shoulders. Right?"

It's time part of the ryzom community stop underestimating the new RoS players.
The big majority of them are not L33t kids escaped from WoW in search of ph@t l00t ;)

Or we can just ask the devs to put "completing the rites & encyclopedia" up next on their "to do" list, after the ring, the new kitin lair, and the spires ;)

I just wouldn't want this game to become a "you must do quest XXX to advance/or you are gimped" type game. I would much prefer getting some lore for completing a quest than loot.

I have no problem with lore as a reward for completed missions. Or a "reward" which has no bearing on the effectiveness of a player's characters... such as an appartment decoration, or perhaps a fun title. Mayne a butt-sticker for my mount which says "I brake for Yubos" or some such fun. ;)

And more poignantly; how many read it and will simply stay in the shadows with thier opinions unspoken, given the loud "LEAVE OUR GAME ALONE" cry uttered by the veterans?

Just a thought.

And another consideration...

How many of those "silent ones" are providing feedback directly to the development staff without ever logging into the forums? The best scenario is to discuss the pros and cons of player suggestions/concerns, and hope for the best situation for all involved.

While I would hate to see Ryzom go in certain directions... I would also hate to see it take no direction and become the next outdated game. We have a beautiful thing here, and it has the capacity to evolve into an even more beautiful creature... of course... it also has the capacity to devolve into something like WoW.

When the players are divided... how does a dev choose?
