Wow...

While I can understand how some of you get frustrated with newbies making suggestions which would change the game from what it is to be something more like other games, I see a thread like this as an opportunity to provide a perspective which may not have been considered by the newbie.

It's not like Ryzom is the most accurately documented game out there. As a veteran MMORPG player, I am amazed at how little information there is that is current.

Are there features I would like to see added to the game? Absolutely, though they are more UI fixes than game changes. I guess my point for posting this is that I am a little surprised by the apparent outrage over a post explaining some of the things a person sees as "not for them", and ASKS people to point them in the right direction to perhaps change their perspective.

For a game with such a good community, some of you were pretty harsh.

You don't like levelling. OK, we throw that out as well.

Self heal timer too long, lets cut it to zero and we can all experience infinite PvP battles and duels as each player spams self heal all the time.

No places of interest, OK, we take the devs off of any developement so they can make lots of places of interest for you.

No Dungeons, Hmm, better make some of those devs make lots of Dungeons for you.

That would make the game really....... Boring IMO

The fact that you got bored with digging after level 11 demonstrates that you must have a very short attention span and I would suggest that you just go and play something a little simpler and that doesn't require so much cranial input.

And saying That DP is a dampner on exploration is just a joke, takes about 5 minutes to recover and how does a DP stop you from exploring ?. I've never seen a system message that says

'Unable to access this area due to Death Penalty not recovered'

I would also suggest that the number of your friends that have tried the game and now left can be counted on one finger and that your claims to how many times you have died is vastly exaggerated. (even if you where to have died once every second whilst logged in 24/7 it would take you over 93 years to log that amount of deaths).

As for this being a Mature post, I find it rather childish that you see fit to make a negative post like this instead of just leaving the game and letting the grown ups get on with it
Diyanna, there's really no reason to get flamey. It doesn't sound like the OP is an innattentive 12-yr old. He just seems to enjoy a style of play that Ryzom just doesn't deliver.

To the OP. there are almost /always/ going to be things that you don't like about an MMO. You simply have to weigh the things you like vs. the things you don't. Complaining about the gameplay in an MMO that's a few years old isn't going to do much. If this was a Beta, maybe. So, you need to decide if you're willing to accept the way Ryzom is, or if you're going to quit playing.

If it's the latter, I hope you find another game that's more to your liking. I truly do.

[Edit: (Deleted bit about Rites) D'oh .. I'm combining my thoughts from two threads into one post.]

Maybe I should rephrase what I am trying to find out here in simpler terms :

"What keeps you playing ryzom e.g. when you last logged in what did you do for fun ?"

Just to say that, as a now-Master level digger, I used to find digging deathly boring and was sitting at about lvl 45 for a year (no exaggeration) until someone came along who I enjoyed digging with. Whenever I make a new character (or play one of my low lvl alts) I usually get deeply bored and frustrated with digging WAY before I get to lvl 11. The fact is that imo, and in the opinion of many other people I know, digging is the most tedious thing to do ingame (with the possible exception of grinding jewelcraft), especially at low levels.

Having said that, I often tell people that it "gets better" as you get to the higher levels, and have heard lowbies commenting the same. I also spend the greatest part of my time when ingame digging away and arguably hold the title of most insane digger on the server (digging ninety thousand mats in 11 days may have something to do with it  )

What makes me loggin in (apart from the addiction) is the fun I have with everything I do. Helping new guildies, helping others to get their masters, getting my masters myself, trying to dig those d*mn hard sup spots in pr, working towardsand on an op fight, going on boss hunts with some friends, diggen those mats for my axe skill to lvl so i can make my own sup axes,...

Dunno what it makes so fun, think its the the peeps you play with and the sence of accomplishment when you reach those goals...

dunno if this helps you, but thats what drives me

And btw, harvesting is very hard and annoying in the beginning. But once you get to lvl 50, you start to have a much better time. It wont take a week anymore to fill your bag then, and the spots pop way easier, it really gets fun then :)

In fact, I am digging right now, playing Ryzom in windowed mode so I can switch from the forums back to game when I hear I'm not digging, or the resource is farting me to death. ;) That makes the digging go by much, much quicker, and I am able to read up on lore... check my email... post here... etc etc

Yeah, let's become personal and insult other players who we don't agree with. Nice going there Tex. :(

To Kusen, SoR is designed as a team game, you can still solo it but you will find that is a slow progress. DP can put a damper on leveling, even more so if you solo.

My advise is to take a break from playing, if you start missing the game then come back and see if it is still for you.

Things that are making me not want to login to Ryzom :
  • Death penalty. This both puts a dampner on exploration and also makes switching from dieing in combat to digging a problem because of the level difference.
  • Levelling just feels like a chore and requires (imho) a group to make any significant progress. Don't get me wrong I like grouping, but there are times when I log in for a short time that I do not want to trouble people to group up.
  • Self heal timer is too slow for solo play.
  • Although the worlds landscape is interesting, there is not many places of interest on them.
  • Complete lack of any 'dungeons' - ok caves would be more fitting here, but so far Prime Roots is the only one I have seen.
  • Digging and crafting do not really interest me but it seems to be what people do a large percentage of the time. Admittiedly I only got to lvl 11 or so dig but that was so boring I do not understand the appeal?
...
I thought I'd go over some of your dislikes and see if I can help you.

As for Death Penalty, I haven't found it harsh that much at all. It usually only takes me a few minutes (3-5) to work it off. Finding the right mobs for your level, skill and equipment is key. It took me a while to find a good spot in the Matis areas, but once I found it, it wasn't too hard to work off a little DP. And for the most part, I never got any, as I was soloing slightly weaker mobs to avoid downtime. The few times I died it was cause I got cocky and did something stupid, or accidentally aggroed a gingo or two.

For levelling, I do agree it can get a little tedious, especially solo. But I just tend to try something different. Like take on a couple gingos for kicks to see if I got what it takes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure if you joined a good guild you could RP/chat with them in between levelling. Soloing is not really the optimal choice in Ryzom, things work much faster in a team. And they're usually more entertaining too.

The self heal timer is long so that people have a use for a healer in groups. It's not bad for soloing, /if/ you use it the way it's meant to be used (at least how I think it's meant to be used). As an "oh crap!" button. When the fight goes bad and you need some health to finish it off. There's a couple Powers that you can use as well, I just can't remember their names for the life of me. One makes you immune to melee damage for 10 secs, yet it still lets you attack (I think?).

If you're soloing then you should try to find mobs that give you decent XP and aren't too hard to kill. You can chain kill multiples of them and still be good for HPs/Sap/Stamina, compared to a harder mob that gives more XP but makes you sit and regen for 2 mins. It's a lot of guess and test here. One thing that's cool about Ryzom, IMO. It lets you experiment a little. Not like most other MMOs.

As for places of interest in the world, I haven't been all over the place (I haven't even left the Matis areas), but there aren't many places (as in old ruins, etc.) to see because of the way the game lore is. The Homins have only recently come back to the surface, and the Kitins destroyed most of the settlements, so there isn't a lot to find. There are a lot of interesting locales and sights, but not so much places like many people would think (towns, ruins, dungeons, castles, etc.). Atys is still mostly wilderness.

[Note: Anyone with more experience feel free to jump in here and correct me, if I'm wrong.]

Again, as for dungeons, Atys isn't like a "traditional" fantasy world. There aren't going to be ruins of things, as /everything/ on Atys is made of plant material. It gets kinda hard to build stone dungeons, castles, etc. when there's no stone around. If I'm reading the lore right, there is absolutely /no inorganic material/ on Atys. No stone, no minerals, no gems, no gold, etc. it seems very hard to make a dungeon when the basic building blocks aren't available. There could be caves, like the Prime Roots, but these aren't even like traditional caves that are formed in rock. Atys caves would have to be formed in trees or plants. I'm not sure if there are any caves in Atys either, as I haven't ventured that far.

As for Crafting and Digging, I'm of a similar mindset as you. I don't really like the foraging at all, and I had a hard time actually finding the exact resource spot. I much prefer the old SWG way of waypoints and a sensor, but that's just me. Perhaps I've been doing it wrong. No matter, as I don't find it at all interesting, really.

Crafting is a major part of what a lot of people do, simply because the best items are crafted. With no loot from mobs, nor any quest reward items, crafters are in high demand, so a lot of people spend time crafting. I think this is a good thing, even though I don't craft (at least not right now). Compared to WoW, where most of what lower lvl crafters make is sub-par compared to looted, quest reward, or even NPC items, Ryzom does it right. If people are going to spend time crafting something, the end product better be potentially good enough that people will actually buy it.

I'm actually thinking about dabbling some more in crafting, so that I can make some items good enough for myself. My one RL friend has enjoyed crafting in MMOs in the past, because he liked being able to make all his own stuff.

I hope some of this might help you. I'm betting you just need to find tht right spot to level and take your time exploring. Don't ask the higher lvl players where things are/what to kill all the time. And don't let them tell you. Find out for yourself. That's one of the best parts about playing Ryzom. Exploring.

And sorry if any of this is a little hard to follow. I'm really tired and hungry right now. Not a good combo.
